Alex 34954
Think Borthwick and Sam Robson both deserved a chance ahead of Ballance like. Looks like Root's going to bat at 3 so Ballance will bat down the order at 5. Hope Dr Gloom's right with his prediction about Root because that would solve probably the biggest issue with the batting line-up. It needs to be sorted soon as India this will be tough and then it's South Africa at home before the next Ashes series down under. I got the impression with Ballance they were hoping he'd develop into a test no.3 but he's had his success at county level batting in the middle order. David Kelly 1224
Think it was Nasser who was saying now is a good time to try Root at three after he's not had such a great (by his standards) series against Sri Lanka. He won't be concerned about moving from where he was doing so well. If it works it would solve a problem and make it easier for Butler to get back into the test team. I was quite surprised to find out Ballance bats so low for Yorkshire. When I've seen him for England he always looked like he was one of the top order grinders rather than a stroke player down the order. I guess that might have been the problem for him if he was trying to play something that wasn't his normal game. David Kelly 1224
I take it Jennings isn't eligible to play for England yet? He seems to be the form batsmen in the county championship at the moment. I think I read somewhere that he wants to play for England.
Alex 34954
Still not convinced about Buttler as a test player at all. He doesn't even have a particularly good first class record. If you have the WK coming in at 7 then his batting ability in the longer format would really worry me. Players like Rashid, Woakes and Moeen Ali all have better records in the 4 day game and you wouldn't put any of those, with the possible exception of Moeen, higher than 8. I also think that, because Buttler and Bairstow still need to work on the technical side of their keeping then it hinders Bairstow's progress if he's only there as a specialist batsman. I also think he's thrived so well there recently that he shouldn't be moved. Basically, although he's an incredibly exciting one day player, I don't see what Buttler's done to suggest he can play test cricket.

Dr Gloom 21868
Wouldn't be surprised to see Root at 3 and Ballance at 5, which is where they each bat for Yorkshire. I'm confident Root can step up to playing 3 at test level. He's a class act - our best all round batsman. I'm less confident Ballance will make in tests against the better sides unless he learns where his off stump is quickly. Maybe that's why they're throwing him back in against Pakistan. I can't see anything but a routine home series victory. Agree that others should have maybe been given a chance before recalling Ballance.

I think he needs to perform at first class level before he's considered. I worry with how well he does in the short form he may never get that much opportunity to play longer form and therefor never really develop like he could in that form. David Kelly 1224
Think he might be after this yearJust in time to play S.A. next year. I think I'm going to try and get to Old Trafford and Heddingly for the tests next year. They're getting them at much better times than Durham and Yorkshire got them this year so we might have a chance of some good days out in the sun. Glad they're giving Vince another try. He wasn't great against Sri Lanka but it's no point just bringing in a player for one series then ditching him. The series doesn't start until the end of June because the ICC Champions Trophy is in England prior to that.

He looked good without getting a score, if that makes sense, so he's definitely worth giving another go.
Dr Gloom 21868
Buttler's a wild card isn't he. He's one of those that might be able to take his one game into the tests, might not. It'd be exciting if he could make the transition though.

The Eric Hollies is the best cricket stand in the country for atmosphere.

Dr Gloom 21868
Oh, you're on about the champions trophy thing next summer. I'm on about this summer's test match against Pakistan at edgbaston
Dr Gloom 21868
Fwiw, dk, I'd highly recommend the mission to Brum for the cricket. Best ground and day out to watch England in the country. I've seen tests at most of the main county grounds and nothing touches Edgbaston for atmosphere. Is more like watching the football than the cricket with the added bonus of being able to get sozzeled in your seat.

David Kelly 1224
Think we're going to try and get to old Trafford and heddingly for a day of test cricket and I think there's a t20 at Durham so that will do us next year. Maybe the year after for edgbaston.
