New Zealand's morning. Feel sorry for the lad on debut, having his first test wicket chalked off due to a no ball.

Does he look any good? His first class stats look the goods.

Chance here for England. Williamson is a nervy starter and Taylor hasn't scored fuck all runs for awhile. Could get a few quickly.

Poor by Latham getting out to the part-timer.

Watch these try their best to run each other out.

Edit:

Very next ball: :jesuswept:

35.4

Broad to Williamson, 1 run, length ball dabbed into the covers, a quick single taken and had Broad thrown down the stumps in his follow through, Taylor would have been out

Aye Ian Smith seems very concerned with their running.

Yep. England are in trouble. This is going to be their problem. Having posted 400 makes a defeat unlikely. But you can't win unless you can bowl the opposition out twice. I don't understand their selection policy it makes very little sense.

The selection policy is rotten, Cook proves that.

Mo Ali and Root are part time bowlers. We need a front line spinner, but who? There's Rashid but they didn't fancy him in the Caribbean, which was surely the time to

give him a go, so unlikely to be thrown in against the Aussies with memories fresh of how they ended Simon Kerrigan's test career before it started. Though you could argue Kerrigan ended it himself with the rubbish he sent down. I was at that match, painful to witness.

The quick bowlers are all a bit too samey, Wood aside, but he's toiled on a flat deck too. We rely on there being movement in the air for Jimmy to work his magic, or for Broad to go on one of those magic wicket-taking bursts, which he manages once every four or five may matches. Not enough consistency or variation in the attack.

And yes, the selectors are to blame for being way too conservative.

You need a specialist spinner. But more than that you need four specialist bowlers. I like Stokes, I think he's a quality player and a legitimate allrounder. If the ECB can't identify a spin bowling option they're better off picking four specialist seamers plus Stokes.

Having a side with three specialist bowlers and expecting to bowl a side out cheaply is madness. The ECB are trying to reinvent the wheel and failing miserably.

Bat the day out and it's game on. The next partnership is the crucial one as all the players coming in after these two can make runs quickly. If cook and root both make a ton, or close, then tomorrow could be an entertaining end to a close test match.

Joe Root man. Fucking class player you have there.

Cook deserves some credit for a really important knock too. Cops alot of shit but he's stood up to be counted today.

Haven't seen the highlights but it must have been something special. Quality player.

Match is in an interesting position. I think a draw is the big favourite at this stage. If NZ can take the last 4 wickets quickly I could see there being a result either way. If England bat for awhile I don't think there'll be a result because Cook won't be brave enough to dangle the carrot with a declaration.

Cook will bat them out of the game before he declares so yeah, draw favourite unless broad goes on a roll and they collapse. Not likely given both sides have been scoring freely at around four an over all match.
