Ridiculous from England this. They looked absolutely fucked at 55/6. That was 3 hours ago and they've since gone a run a ball to reach 240-6.

Howe, Stokes, Bairstow. 2022 is the year of the ginger.

telling all your aggressive batters to play their natural great sounds great when you're playing at home and winning. might not look so clever down under or in the subcontinent. but it's going to be good craic along the way. the other thing to point out is we've been shite trying to coach ODI specialists to play proper test innings so maybe we are better off telling them to play the only way they really know how to.

sangakkara was on sky yesterday suggesting we open with buttler in this line up. i mean sure, why not? can't be worse than crawley. it would be nice if we could unearth a few batters with a strong defence. i like foakes in this set up to break up the likes of bairstow and stokes

That was the plan with Jason Roy, and facing a new ball in the red game still needs a bit of care initially.  Crawley just doesn't know whether to stick or twist and ends up doing neither

It’s been fantastic and lovely to be proven wrong about Bairstow at least for now. I think some factors need to be considered. The Kiwi selections were poor and it also helped being in a ODI chase situation for batsmen who are really good at that. You’ve also got this batch of Dukes balls which deteriorate quickly and don’t seem to reverse swing. But that was still an absolutely sensational set of performances against a very good NZ team. Buttler opening is a daft notion imo. And I think Crawley is a three. But I wouldn’t want to move 3-7 in the batting positions in the near future. Lees looks like best opener we’ve had in a while. On the bowling side Potts looks class and like he could bowl all day. Robinson should take note. Overton needs to bowl short spells as fast as he can

Potts will certainly take a lot of shifting from this team and Overton's batting looks better than his brother (clearly his bowling is faster too), so Robinson is going to have to get much fitter, and other bowlers are going to struggle to get back even when they are over their current injuries.

I don't know who else is out there as an opener, though.  Perhaps they just have to persist with Crawley and hope for the best, like Pope.  After all, being a number 3 is practically the same as an opener, as the opener can get a first ball duck anyway.

Robinson doesn’t look athletic does he? Not sure you can get away with not looking after yourself off the field anymore. Agree that Potts looks a find.

If Crawly has a future in tests he needs to be given a go lower down the order for me. He’s  too vulnerable in the channel to play in the top 3 - another James Vince, the amount of times he nicks off to the new ball. Looks great when it works but he keeps getting out the same way.

Even when he’s been playing well Robinson bowls about 5 mph slower in the evening session if England have been bowling all day. Like you say, with players being that much fitter and all the analysis now, you can’t get away with not being in peak condition

he has ability, so it's up to him. getting in shape is the easy bit.

he could learn something fro the likes of stokes, who is supremely fit and athletic. there isn't room for players built like inzamam ul-haq in the modern game

Potts has clearly went away and improved his fitness/strength in the off season.  Last season he looked like possibly getting involved with the England set up in white ball cricket and useful with the red ball but well behind the likes of Rushworth and Raine, and possibly Carse, as the main bowler for Durham. His improvement has been phenomenal really.

This is just silly. Fantastic but silly. The Indian team being absolute wankers makes it all the sweeter. I thought it would be all over in the first hour today. But I meant in terms of it being decided what the result would be, not literally
