Yeah, that approach worked for winning the World Cup but it has to change if we want to do well in tests. We split the captaincy in tests and one dayers - I don’t see why the same can’t apply to coaches. They’re such different games now - the best one day coaches, like Bayliss, aren’t necessarily the guys you want devising batting strategy when the chips are down in a test match

They did try it for a while, but when Bayliss came in he was on his own.  He is basically a limited overs coach, anyway, and was brought in for the purpose of winning the World Cup - although it would have been nice to have won the Ashes this year, as well.

I am all for separate coaches, in principle, but there still needs to be someone over them who can ensure that players are not burned out, because of competing requirements of those separate coaches.

For example, the limited overs coach will want his players in the IPL, but the test coach will want them rested for the summer, or playing red ball cricket at home.

Not sure how we handle that, because, in the main, the core of the players is the same for each format.

Should the main core of players be the same though?  Is picking too many white ball players instead of red ball specialists weakening our test team?  Or is it just that we don't have the quality in red ball players.  We'd hoped the likes of Stoneman, Jennings and Hameed would come through and be fixtures in the test team but they've not been able to step up.

The main core does not have to be the same, it just so happens that the best cricketers are the best cricketers.  As you say, Stoneman, Jennings and Hameed have not shown up.

The real problem was with Hameed, who seemed destined to be the next Cook, when in India, got injured there and has never got any sort of form back.  I am sure that everyone was dancing for joy at the ECB in his first test, but I suppose there have been lots of players over the years who have flattered to deceive.  He just seemed to have it all, especially at such a young age. :(

Retired? I heard Lancashire released him. Bloody hell!

He was only early 20s. You’d think plenty of time to still make a decent career, even if not a test match player, rather than walk away.

Might be wrong but I thought I’d read he’d decided to pack in after he was released. He’s a perfect example of a talent not being nurtured because he’s a red ball specialist. You can hardly blame Lancs though. If they put a lot of resources into a player like that there’s precious little for them to gain from it bar a bit of kudos if he makes the test side

Can't see anything online about Hameed retiring, just about the release from Lancashire.  He's actually averaged towards 30 this season which isn't great but is a massive improvement on his 9 from last season.  Durham are still struggling with their batting so maybe they can take a punt on him.

root fails to convert a 50 again. just saw this on TMS

Joe Root - 50s: 44. 100s: 16.

Steve Smith - 50s: 26. 100s 26.

perhaps we're being too harsh on him, smith is a bit of a freak, but i think the reason we're harsh on Root is because he's out best batsman and he's not quite up there with smith, kohli and williamson. he gets loads of scores but doesn't go on to really punish the opposition enough.

It’s nowhere near enough runs on this pitch after being lucky to be inserted. It’s a bat first wicket. Should have been looking at at least 300.

Smith will no doubt make us pay for it tomorrow. Sick to death of watching that cunt bat.

It’ll be all over pretty quick I’d imagine with ball being new and the bowlers refreshed. Barring something special from Buttler that’s nowhere near enough runs on the board

2-2 probably about right in the end. could have been 3-1 either way - they were unlucky a stokes miracle innings denied them at headingly. we might have bowled them out at lords if we'd inserted them slightly earlier.

i think overall they won more sessions over the series than we did and deserved to retain the urn. we should do better down under next time with proper pace in archer, and hopefully wood if he can stay fit, to compliment the attack. should be more competitive than last time, at least, and this series showed there is life after anderson. our bowling is still excellent in home conditions, broad might have a few more summers left in him after all. the problem remains the flaky batting. it'll be interesting to see if the new coach continues with all the all rounders or brings in specialist test players - ben foakes for example didn't do a lot wrong before being discarded and is probably the best wicket keeper available. is there room for both buttler and bairstow etc

their bowling is good but smith holds their batting together. we would have spanked them without his runs. highlight of the series for me was david warner's batting - poetic.
