vince looks too vulnerable outside off for a test player. looks lovely when it comes off, but i don't think i've seen him play in a test when he hasn't nicked off tamely to the cordon. maybe it is a mental thing, but he's had about 15 tests to sort it out, which is a much longer chance than a lot of others have had before the selectors ended their test careers.

i would give hales another chance, but lower down the order, before recalling vince again.

what's kp up to these days?

Great to see Wood come back at a real pace yesterday.  The last few times I've seen him he's looked like he'd lost something but whether it's down to his fitness or his new run up, he was superb yesterday.  Just in the nick of time for him too with Stone coming into the squad and Archer likely to get some sort of call up in the near future.

jennings fails again. enough already. he cannot play against the aussies

I agree re: Jennings and especially after the way he got out but although they haven’t gotten loads of runs in either innings (unless Denly gets a big score) it’s worked to an extent playing 2 openers and a number 3 in their proper positions. In the first innings they blunted the attack enough to allow some of the middle order to play their natural game and even in the 2nd innings Jennings has faced 99 balls. Much better balance to the team than the square pegs in round holes approach we’d seen previously.

I know they are missing Holder this match and certainly haven't been helped by the injuries, but playing a correctly balanced team with an actual top order, even a far from great one, has helped massively I think.  Jennings will be, deservedly, jettisoned after this match and unless he completely remodels his technique you can't see him getting back in.  Christ knows who's going to replace him though.  Apparently Nick Gubbins is one who they have looked at but his average is nothing to write home about.  Roy looks as deserving as anyone as at least he's shown himself to be more than capable against top class bowlers.  But of course that's not in red ball cricket so we'd be just about back to square one in terms of playing middle order players in the top order.

If you’re going to play Roy as an opener in tests you may as well put someone like Barstow up there. I think they already tried Moeen up there too at one point. The problem is we have loads of exciting all rounders but you ideally want them batting in the middle order, not opening or at three.

But when the so called specialist opening batters continue to fail, where do you go next? I have no idea. We still haven’t replaced Strauss, or Trott at number three for that matter, let alone Cook.

The difference in batting styles in that ODI yesterday was really good to watch.  I know the wicket offered very little for the bowlers and that could have made for a very boring game even with such a big total to chase.  But the way we went about it I thought was exceptional.  Admittedly their fielding was awful and their attack was anything but strong.

The calls for Roy to be given a go in the test team are getting louder and louder now.

Woakes can get to fuck. Who cares if Archer didn’t play in the last few years. He wasn’t eligible. If he impresses in these next two ODIs, he makes the squad. Suck it up

You could argue that a few of the bowlers, Curran and Willey maybe, haven't done a great deal recently to cement their place.  And in Curran's case in particular, he's never he's never really cemented a place, he's only played 13 times.  I would think he'll be the most at risk.  Willey offers the left arm option and I think Plunket deserves his place more than both of them.

Woakes has to prove his fitness but I don't think there's any chance of him being left out other than that.  Wood's overall record is probably the worst but again with his pace and the form he's showed recently, I think he'll be in baring injury.  Which given he's missed Durham's first three matches, might not be out of the question.

Of course Archer has to actually perform in these games, he's only played in 14 list A games so far.

Nice distraction from the shambles at st James today. Massive game with Sri Lanka threatening to creep in through the back door if we slip up again. Got to bowl first if we win the toss. Been raining overnight, moisture in the air and a lords pitch with a green top. Probably drop Moeen and go with a 5-strong Sean attack of Archer/Wood/Woakes/Plunkett/Stokes
