Dr Gloom 22233
Not sure what he's done to deserve so many chances tbf. Others have been discarded for good for much less
David Kelly 1260
I suspect the Yorkshire connection with Root was a big factor in his latest comeback. He has been in superb form for Yorkshire this season mind.
Alex 35681
Thing is they obviously rate Ballance but he's scored runs this year for Yorkshire at 4 and prior to that I think he batted at 5 quite a lot. Because there haven't been any decent opening partnerships he's effectively a middle order batsman being asked to do the job of an opener. If you rate a batsman at least play him in his proper position, especially when they first come into the side after a break or whatever, to give them a decent chance. I'm not really of the opinion he is good enough but it's still not being fair on the lad.
David Kelly 1260
Aye he's not being given the proper chance. What's the point in playing him out of position and fucking him up. It's like Pardew is running the England team.
Dr Gloom 22233
ballance should be down at 5 or 6, if in the side at all. there's nothing about him at all that suggests he's a test number
David Kelly 1260
He won't be for the next test as he's out with a broken finger. Good news for us I think. Not sure who the options would be to replace him. Typically this has fell in the middle of a spell of no red ball cricket being played. I'd go with Stoneman opening and move Jennings to 3. I still think we need another batsman in instead of Dawson unless they think it will spin again at the Oval. Maybe Butler in as wicket keeper and Bairstow just batting. Dunno whether the selectors have agreed (well they certainly haven't about Stoneman) or if it's just that their hand has been forced with the injury to Ballance, but they've included Westley from Essex and Malan for the next test. Looks like Westley at 3 and Malan replacing either Dawson or Wood. Hopefully they'll leave that last decision until they see the pitch but they've probably already decided. Dr Gloom 22233
Pretty ugly 8 ball duck from Jennings there. Still struggling to convince as a test opener. Will we ever find a partner for cook before he retires? Edited July 27, 2017 by Dr Gloom
David Kelly 1260
Aye Jennings is struggling. I always thought he'd be a better number 3 than an opener but Hameed's poor form has robbed him of that chance for now. He looks like he needs to go back to Durham to try and find some form but the way they are batting at the moment that probably wont help.
Alex 35681
Hameed scored a century the other day (albeit for Lancs 2nd XI v MCC).
Dr Gloom 22233
Funny series. All you seem to need to do is win the toss, make around 350+, batting first, then watch the other side capitulate
Dr Gloom 22233
Root continuing the recent trend of ultra conservative declarations. There's plenty of time in the game to wrap it up but he's going to have to learn to be a bit more aggressive in certain situations. I don't get why English captains bat on till they've got a final innings lead of over 450 runs. How many do you need ffs? Alex 35681
Think the record winning run chase in Tests at the Oval is 230-ish and that was before WWII. So aye, setting them 490-odd was a tad conservative. The last 50-odd runs in particular seemed totally pointless. Obviously it looks like England will win and I thought that even before the start of the SA innings but it seemed odd to give them a chance of saving the match. David Kelly 1260
SA seemed to be quite happy to let us have as many runs as we wanted before the declaration yesterday. They clearly knew we'd had far too many runs for them to chase long before we did.

Dr Gloom 22233
I was there yesterday in the party stand. Decent day out: slow morning session but was great to see moeen bat them out of the game: is there a better number 8 in test cricket? great atmosphere too, a highlight coming when the walrus mask was thrown around, which the Sky camera man eventually put it on to massive cheers from the crowd.
