bit harsh from boycs after moeen just chalked up a ton batting at 4. fwiw, i would bat moeen a little lower but i think both he and bairstow are more than capable of batting higher than 7 and 8 respectively.

We need to find some batsmen so we can play Stokes at six, Jonny Bairstow at seven and Moeen Ali at eight. Moeen's a good cricketer, though he's not the greatest spinner. Well done to England, a good day which could have been worse.

Dunno what he said but Ali isn't a 4 for me.  He's clearly a capable batsman as this is his forth century this year, but some of the shots he plays certainly aren't that of a top order batsman.  And given the fact that he's going to be expected to bowl quite a bit too, I certainly wouldn't have him higher than 6.  Bairstow is clearly capable of batting at 5 but you have to consider him playing as a keeper too.  If we bat second and he's had a long period in the keeping, it might be better that he's moved down a spot?

Boycs is making the point about Bairstow if he's going to be keeping. If he's just going to be a batsman and Buttler has the gloves then keep him at 5.

Hopefully Root will be back at 4 in the summer too. Getting a bit frustrated by his lack of conversation at the moment, if he does get the captaincy it might kick him on like it has Kohli.

Eh? He just made 88

Edit - ah, misread that. I guess you meant conversion rather than conversation. I figured you meant contribution for a moment, which would be a little daft given he's the second highest run scorer in test cricket in 2016.

And that you put down entirely down to him playing at 3?

I think he's a class act. Number 3 is clearly a more challenging role in the order to play than 4 or 5 but he's good enough to do it. He's a world class batsman. He could probably open the innings too if needed.

Until now we haven't had the luxury of being able to play him lower in the order because the openers and the middle order have been struggling. Hopefully the emergence of the two youngsters will change that.

I've never once said it's down to him being at number 3 or that he's not world class man.

It's just frustrating at the moment because he is so good and you want to see him totally dominate the opposition.

This is an unbelievable knock by Karun but the Indians are giving us a better chance of saving it by letting him bat on to get his 300. You wouldn't have fancied 8 or 10 overs at the end of he day after more than two days in the field.
