I don't see how Vince can stay in the team, he's managed absolutely nothing in two series now. Hales probably deserves another change as did well against Sri Lanka but I do worry that's just because their attack was so weak.

Ali has to move up the order with Rashid coming in further down. Stokes has to come back in so it's just a question of how they do that, either as a batsman (which I think,as I said before, will take something away from him) or as a replacement for one of the other seamers (probably Finn).

hard to disagree with vic marks - https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2016/aug/15/alastair-cook-england-batting-bowling-options

moeen's average with the ball is 41 - on the evidence so far, he's just not a frontline spinner and it's unfair on him to continue to play him as one. tbf, he's done a decent job, but i say let him concentrate on his batting, which is looking better all the time, and pitch in with some occasional off breaks and give rashid a go in the winter tours as your main spinner.

and sorry vince, but your time is up mate. 7 matches without a half century and an average of less than 20 isn't good enough.

Aye fair enough, Vince needed to make a score this series really and he had enough chances to do it.

Yes Alex, it's always sad when the last test is over and done with.

By the way I watched Death of a Gentleman last night, an excellent film about the state of the game. I've never been a fan of 20-20 right from the start, but I had no idea how dodgy the whole thing is! Anyway it's a quality film and definitely worth a watch for anyone interested in cricket, especially if you grew up watching test cricket.

Listened to the radio the other day and before the cricket started they were speaking with Ade Edmondson about his cricket experiences, very funny indeed.  He was talking about sledging someone called Gillespie at a game once and ended up getting thrown out

Tooj told me about Death of a Gentleman but I haven't got round to seeing it yet. I know it's on Netflix now. One of the journalists who made it, an Aussie called Jarrod Kimber is an excellent cricket writer. He does a good blog (https://cricketwithballs.com/) too.

Just had a look at that blog, seems good, cheers! They both come across as canny lads in the film

I hope they don't go to two divisions in test cricket, as has been mooted, because that'll kill it stone dead in some places.

Michael Vaughan seems to be a bid advocate of going to 2 divisions but I haven't heard/read him explain his reasons. I don't know - it's just a shame that it really does seem to have come to a crunch for test cricket, and according to that documentary it's all because of 20:20, the Indian cricket board's obsession with it, and the lack of will/ability of the other boards to stand up for the best interests of the game worldwide.

There's just so much TV money in T20 in India which causes all these problems.

Btw, I see the Aussies lost 3-nowt to Sri Lanka in the end. Almost makes me wish Ken still posted regularly.

Fantastic performance yesterday.  The change since the world cup is incredible.  We must be near the top of the one day rankings now.

Talking of rankings, I see Steyn has moved back to the top of the bowling rankings now.  I'm not totally sure how it works but they seem to change whenever anyone plays a match.  What's the point in them changing that frequently?  A player moves to the top by virtue of having played rather than because he played particularly well.  I think Steyn took a few wickets for nothing against NZ to be fair but Anderson was top after that last Pakistan test without playing particularly well.  It becomes pretty much meaningless when they do it like this.

They're updated straight after a test I think and I think it's on performances over the last year (a bit like how they do the tennis rankings). I don't see how else they could do it in terms of the updates (otherwise it would soon get out of date).

If they're based on performances over a year that makes sense it just seems lately that after every test we've had a new number one.  Broad, Ashwin, Anderson, Yasir and now Steyn.  It looked to me like the most recent performance was making all the difference.

I.e. Broad has a good test so all of a sudden he's number one in the world.  But as soon as someone else plays they are.  It just seemed whoever played played most recently was number one.

I don't know if any of you have ever listened to Graham Hunter's Big Interview Podcast, if not I'd really recommend the latest one.

It's with Phil Neville and he spends quite a bit of it just chatting about his days playing cricket at youth level for England and the tough decision he had to make when it came to playing that or football.

Also talks about playing in the local Lancashire leagues when he was a kid, opening the batting as an 11 year old facing Ottis Gibson.

He's also really good friends with Mark Taylor as he used to play for the same side as him, along with Matthew Hayden as well.
