Rashid has been a white ball specialist for too long now to go back. It’s all about almost constant variation when you’re bowling in the shorter forms of the game. Test cricket, on the other hand, requires a bowler to have a stock ball which they produce at least 4 balls an over.

You’re right that it’s probably too late for him now but he needed a run in the side to develop his test game, which never really got. He was unlucky not to get more of a chance, when you look at his natural ability to turn the ball compared to the the others.

Curran replaces Archer, Crawley comes back in for stokes. I like Curran’s left arm option and he offers more with the bat but I’m surprised they didn’t opt for one of either Archer or Wood, for the extra pace option.

Still though, no 3 has been a problem since Trott retired and Root hasn’t been the answer. Especially with captaincy on top of that. I was watching some highlights of the 2015 Ashes recently and he’s still class but he’s a shadow of that player. Pretty sure the stats show he’s better in the middle order than 3 though. And he has a massive score at 3 which skews that a bit

I’ll bite every time. You know me well.

Root is good enough to play at 3 but his average is a concern generally since he took on the captaincy. Prior to that he was talked about in the same breath as Smith and Kohli but he’s lost about 5-6 runs from his average since he became skipper. It’s a separate issue, even if he does go back to regularly playing in his preferred position of 4.

There’s no question his average is better at 4/5. But it’s easier to make a score when the ball is older. I always felt your best all round batsman should come in at 3 - someone who can play the situation and defend if the ball is still new when they come in, but also go through the gears when required.

Totally agree number 3 has been a problem position since Trott retired, particularly as Root clearly doesn’t want to play there, then you have the extra burden of the captaincy weighing on his batting.

Had the day off today and watched most of Crawley’s innings - it was very, very impressive. Hard to believe you were watching a 22 year old with an unimpressive average in FC cricket, coming in while wickets were falling around him. From his first shot, a beautifully timed half volley off his pads, he barely played a false shot. He had power and timing. Looks a real prospect, which is great because I’m still not convinced by the two openers.

Buttler seems to have made a technical correction since the start of the summer too. His balance and timing were on point from the first ball too.

I missed pretty much all this test. Checked the score and got some on the radio...

As much as I wasn't expecting a result pretty much as soon as I got back through the door and put the cricket on they sacked it off
