Yet another daddy hundred for cook. Shame no one could go big with him. Another example of root making 50 them getting out rather than cashing in like smith. Good first innings lead but we still haven’t completely batted them out of the game, which we would have done had just one other player made a ton alongside him.

Yeah, he’s got 5 or 6 test match tons despite batting in every spot 1-9

Not sure what Moeen was doing today. White ball cricket hasn't started yet.

Played many more tests though.

Most of which he opened in England against the duke ball. His average of 47 for an openener who has played half his tests in English conditions is up there with the best ever.

As an openererer he has excelled, credit where it is due. The best English batsman since Wally Hammond.

Not the most pleasing on the eye but you have to admire his tenacity and determination. And his concentration levels. This isn’t the first time he’s ended a barren run with a massive score.

No idea what his role was this series, me.

He’s never been the greatest spinner but he has been able to pitch in with wickets, where as in this test he has looked completely toothless. Not helped by injury but when you compare his performances with the amount of turn Lyon has been able to get you have to question his role in the team. As a spinning all rounder he has excelled for us but he’s only our frontline spinner because a lack of options. his batting form looks to have been affected by his non performances with the ball. He has been excellent in 2017 up until this tour.

Textbook England on this tour - play pretty well then throw away a good position very quickly. Another failure to play a captain’s innings from root and convert a 50 into a ton after doing the hard work. It’s starting to become a bit of a habit for him.

don't think 350 is enough on this surface. suspect we're heading for 4-0 or a draw

Agreed. A draw is the most likely outcome here unless the pitch degrades enough for Lyon to trouble your batsmen. Be happy with a draw.

Calling a draw was premature. The wicket is turning big time so Lyon will definitely be amongst it in the 2nd innings.

Mason Crane looks a canny leggy. His figures don't do him justice, great flight and  turn. The lad has a good career ahead of him.

Only 20 too. Struggling to draw too many positives from this match though and the whole tour tbh. England seemingly incapable of turning promising positions into match winning situations. And our bowling is toothless on certain surfaces down under.

Your touring debutants have fared well tbf - Stoneman and Malan. You'll never be a threat here unless you develop players with genuine pace - Jofra Archer looks likely but I don't know what his status is, talk that he has to wait a few years before he can represent at international level. I have a soft spot for leg spinners, I appreciate their craft, I hope Crane can kick on from here. The kid certainly has a bit of heart.

Poor management to think we’d have a chance touring down under with a bowling attack comprised entirely of medium fast swing bowlers and without a frontline spinner.

Vince’s series went just as we expected. Lots of classy-looking cover drives in several starts before nicking off to slip. Has to be dropped for NZ.

Malan one of the few bright spots. He deserves a run at 5. Moeen has to be picked as a batsman first and foremost with his spin bowling a bonus. He isn’t consistent enough with the ball to be considered a frontline spinner. And his position should be under threat if he doesn’t make scores in NZ. Unfortunately crane’s figures don’t suggest he is ready to step in. Maybe give Jack Leach a go.

It’s easy to blame our demise on stokes but we’d have lost even if he had toured. We need to get unearth at least one bowler with genuine pace before the next time we tour here or it’ll be the same story again. Don’t think wood with his injury record is the answer.

Was interesting to hear Boycott's view on our preparation for the series.  It really couldn't have gone much worse when you think about it.  We had three batsmen who had massive question marks over them ahead of the series (with only Malan coming through the test), no first choice spinner, no pace in the attack without Wood, the Stokes situation and warm up games against the equivalent of playing Cramlington seconds.  If we want to improve as a test side and be able to win games away from home, the ECB needs to seriously look at changing things so we aren't so one dimensional.  I'm not sure there will be any great desire to do this mind as there's not many teams in the world who can really look good away from home.  India were imperious at home last year but got stuffed by S.A. in the first test this week.  It's going to end up with another problem for test cricket because the crowds are already dwindling and if series aren't competitive it will only get worse.
