i think hales could be the answer at 5, and a second option to open, like you say, if stoneman has a nightmare.

number 3 is still a big headache. who do you play there out of that squad? vince? ballance, malan? i'm surprised they haven't picked westley tbh

i'd pick hales ahead of foakes as deputy wickie too as he can be a potential match winner with the bat

Re: Hales, he hasn't kept wicket anywhere near enough to play at test level. Foakes on the other hand is supposed to be technically excellent as opposed to being another batsman converter into a 'keeper.

I'd have definitely taken Hales.  He's not an opener at test level (or any level of red ball cricket tbf to him) but he's an experienced international batsman.  Compared to taking three uncapped players, I think he'd be a very good addition to the squad.

Can't for the life of me understand why they persist with Ballance.  Shame about Wood but it's understandable given his fitness issues.  I doubt we'll see much past Anderson, Broad, Woakes and Stokes (assuming availability) in the fast bowling department anyway mind, even if Wood is the best suited.

who's dick is ballance sucking behind the scenes?

we're getting dicked with this lot, sorry selectors but that's shit. at least stokes is still going even if he's only got one hand and a court case hanging over him.

Root, Cook, Stoneman, Malan, Ballance, Vince, Moeen, Crane, Foakes, Bairstow, Stokes, Woakes, Broad, Anderson, Ball, C. Overton.

typo - i meant to say buttler

Yeah, I think Buttler would've been fair enough but looks like they've decided to plan for the future which I think is fair enough because it's unlikely he'll play anyway and Buttler's seemingly another one categorised as a 'white ball specialist'. The seam bowling all looks much of a muchness to me and I think we'll struggle for wickets. Looking a bit grim atm

Ballance is Root's mate. I know that sounds daft but I honestly can't think of another explanation.

The thing I'm clinging to is that they don't look any great shakes either at the moment.  Warner and Smith are obviously class but beyond that I don't think they have anyone up to the standard of Stokes, Bairstow and Ali.  Bowling is probably going to be key though and that might depend on who they have available.  The last few times I've seen them, they haven't had Starc or Hazlewood playing.  I don't know if this because they are resting them or if they have injury problems, but if either of them are missing it would really even things up.

cummins looks a good prospect. it'll probably be him alongside hazlewood, starc, pattinson with lyon, who is a better spinner than moeen.

I've just googled them both and yeah they have been injured but it doesn't seem like they're too concerned about them not being available.  Them two, and Cummings with Lyons for Spin is certainly a strong attack in their conditions.

I don't think it's a forgone conclusion that we'll lose though and I certainly don't see us getting the thrashing we got last time.

We aren't tbf but playing test matches on slow, broken up and shitty Bangladeshi wickets isn't really a yardstick of how the team is going.

That's five bolwers though.  Doubt they'll do that.  Most of them can bat a bit but none of them are all rounders.  I'd guess they'll play another batsman.

smith has hinted at playing all four in the ashes alongside Lyon. Like you say, no natural all rounders there but they can all bat a bit. And it's the bowling that will win the series as both sides have holes in their batting lineups.

What about the pitches when you played South Africa?

South Africa are good. Play well on hard pitches. Don't think England are near there level which makes this Ashes series interesting. It will be close.

Funny because Swann reckons Moeen is one of the most naturally gifted spinners he's seen in recent years but he lacks the self belief. You'd have to have Lyon ahead of him though. The latter's turned into a genuinely class off-spinner.

Did you not see us just beating them 3-1?

I think it will be close too.  I think Australia have the edge playing at home but I don't think it's a forgone conclusion.

There were mitigating factors but saying we're not near their level is an absurd attempt at wummery
