You can say that Ballance deserves another chance given his superb county form and he did have a pretty good test record before he was brought back at a stupid time when he was out of nick.  But it's daft bringing him back in the top order.

I thought Stoneman might have got a chance.  It was interesting to hear Nasser say on Saturday that he'd spoken to Bayliss about him and he'd said that he'd just not had the chance to see him play.

Aye, I'm sure Hameed will come back but there's no way you can pick him at the moment.  For me, we should have either went with someone like Stoneman to open and play Jennings at 3.  Or play a different keeper and move Bairstow up the order as a batsman.

so ballance is in at 3 <_<

and dawson starts ahead of rashid - why? smacks of negativity. should be giving the leggy more opportunities to develop, surely? he's shown enough promise and is decent with the bat.

poor dismissal from cook, nothing shot, wafting outside off stump. no foot movement.

just when you need a top player at 3 to steady the ship .... up steps gary ballance

england getting their reviews all wrong here. piss poor, and no big surprise ballance has failed again, though he did look slightly more comfortable than usual driving through the covers during his brief stay at the crease.

skipper's innings required from root. he's got to be captain sensible while stokes biffs a few around him. no need to force the issue on day 1

Snorter of a ball too.

Away from the test match Durham have picked up a second win today.  Excellent run chase on what they thought was going to be a spinning pitch on day four against a Derbyshire side containing Tahir among their three spinners.  Ninety odd not out from Burnham, good to see their youngsters coming through.

I know Dawson can bat a bit but you would have to think this is an important partnership for England given his lack of experience
