David Kelly 1245 Posted January 13, 2017 Share Posted January 13, 2017 I think I mentioned this last season but one of my mates who I used to play Sunday league footie with is now playing for Perth Scorchers in the BBL. He got only the 2nd hatrick in the competitions history yesterday I seen that. He did with the last ball of one over and the first two of the next. Didn't even realise he did it at first. Perth are looking really good although they've lost David Willey to England and he had been doing really well for them. Bell has been scoring well for them too. He split up with his lass so fucked off back home and played club cricket. Got scouted and signed for a pro team, then did well enough to get into the BBL. Won the newcomer award in his first season and ended up in the IPL and getting caps for the Australia T20 team as well as coming back here every summer to play in the T20 for Gloucestershire. He's done a fantastic job changing the attitude of the one day team but with the bat he's certainly not doing enough to justify his place ahead of the likes of Bairstow and Billings. Dr Gloom 21924 Posted February 6, 2017 Share Posted February 6, 2017 (edited) why not? it looks like root will move back down to 4, given the emergence of hameed and jennings. i can see cook taking a raul dravid like approach to that position. a wall for others to build their innings around. and then you don't have to ask one of the youngsters to do it. it's one of the most difficult positions to fill in the lineup - why not have one of your best, and most experienced bastmen there? Dr Gloom 21924 Posted February 6, 2017 Share Posted February 6, 2017 i'd caveat that by saying if you play three openers at the top of the order, it doesn't matter hugely which order they play in. but i think the experience cook brings could give him the edge at 3 over the other two. he's only ever opened the batting for england - a new challenge like that might invigorate him to score even more runs and break even more records. he averages around 47 as an opener, which is pretty incredible. it wouldn't surprise me if he bumped it up to around 50 playing at 3, and without the pressure of also captaining the side. he could easily have another 5 years batting in tests, he's still only in his early 30s. Especially when in less than a year that new ball will be against the best pace attack in the world in their own back yard. I genuinely don't get how you think that it would be better to ask one of the youngsters to open, as that's not as tough of a task at number 3. Cook can be and has been a wall in the past opening, plus he's never batted at 3. I think not having the captaincy will be enough to re-invigorate him, not moving him to an unfamiliar position. Cook's experiencing opening in Australia will also be invaluable to us, especially as in 2011 he had his best ever series. it's honestly one of the most ludicrous things I've read man.
