Is it not good for Hameed just to be on the tour for a bit of experience at that age?

I would have played Butler instead of Ballance.  Ballance has never convinced me and Buttler is already used to the conditions over there and was in great form in the ODI's.

The lack of tour matches (especially given has hasn't featured in the ODIs) means the experience he'll gain will be negligible if he doesn't play in the tests.

same. i'm too sure how ballance is still clinging to his spot. the bangers would be fearing buttler after the ODIs like you say

I just think at his age any time he spends with the rest of the squad is going to be valuable.  So will spending time over in the sub continent.  Ok so he might not play but it seems that he's destined to play at some point in the future.  When that time comes he'll have this experience to fall back on.

I disagree, it's not like being part of the England football squad where training etc. helps you gain experience. It's just sitting around and carrying drinks.

The matches maybe (and yestderdays training by the looks of it) but there will have been training before hand and just being away from home in this sort of environment (with the very different security and such).  He's bound to be a bit more comfortable with it in the future if he comes back.

I'm not saying there's much (if any) improvement as a player he's going to get from it but I just think it will help him be more comfortable with the situation whenever his real time comes.

toss the new ball tomorrow to batty and rashid?

They have to let one of the spinners start at least.  I can't see Broad being much use to us at all in this match.  Might have been worth leaving him out and going with four spinners.  Not that I think we'd ever go that way.

Good recovery by them after those early breakthroughs. Batty still to bowl a maiden.

In other news, India have finally agreed to use DRS in the series with England. Welcome to the last decade!
