terrible shot, bairstow. looks like it might all be over by saturday

It's a cunt having a test start on a Wednesday. Seems ages since we've had one go near the full five days and a lot of the time they're over in not much more than three days. It's going to spoil my weekend viewing if it ends as soon as it looks like it's going to. I'll have to watch some football at this rate.

ah, gutted for ballance. he was playing the leg spinner really well, getting well forward, but then he feathers one to the keeper down the leg side. he was the one who looked like maybe going on to make a ton. last two recognised batsmen in now. if they can hang on to the close, it won't have been the worst day, having been put in to bat. big ask though. anything over 300 is about par, given recent first innings scores on this pitch have generally been pretty low.

I suppose Hales in particular being an opener. As a number 4 Vince has to play a few more shots but he also needs to be able to score ugly. It seems to me that we would be better off with Ballance at 4 and Vince and 5. Of course when they both end up coming it at about the same time it makes no difference but I think if Ballance is in with one of Cook or Root he might hang around longer and allow Vince to come in with us in a better position.

desperate for two or three more wickets before the close here but doesn't look like much is happening, unless they're more effective with the second new ball than the were with the first

Think we might have been better getting ourselves out earlier last night and having a go at them then. The ball seemed to be swinging then and we might have got a couple of early wickets and put them under pressure. Only 86 ahead now and they look comfortable as anything.

Good to get Younus early this morning, if we can get Misbah quickly it's game on.

Must be a minefield down at Taunton for the Durham game. Before the end of the first session on day two there's been 23 wickets. Somerset currently 0 for 3 in their second innings.

Aye you've got a belter of a day tomorrow, especially as the weather is set fair - enjoy yourself! This is one of the beauties of test cricket, I never would have said the game would have been set up like this at close of play yesterday. Ideally the pitch would be deteriorating and England would have a quality spinner to take advantage, but neither of those things seem to be the case so it may well peter out into a draw. You never know though, there's probably a few twists and turns for us to enjoy yet.

HAve a slog for 5 overs then declare. They've no chance of chasing down over 300 so may as well give ourselves as much time as possible to bowl them out. Knowing cautious Cook, he'll probably bat out the morning session

Good day at the cricket on Saturday. Sun blazed hard all day so sporting a nice lobster look today.

The Eric Hollies was slightly subdued. Partially I think because of the pedestrian scoring rate during most of the day till the final session when Moeen and Bairstow upped the ante. Even when it got rowdy though, the main song was "don't take me home, I just don't want to go to work".

I always thought this was a Newcastle football chant until I heard it loads at the euros - think it was the Welsh or the Irish who sang it? The other one was a new Joe Root/Icelandic football clap mash up. All in all though quite a sedate day by Edgbaston standards - loads of empty seats around the ground too. Some decent fancy dress efforts though beyond the obvious ones you see every year like super heroes etc. 6 chefs and a lobster - cue "what's the coming over the hill, is it a lobster?" And 6 fox hunting toffs chasing a fox were probably the standouts.

Everyone was singing the don't take me home chant at the Euros. We've been singing it since Benfica at least. I found it quite disconcerting to hear it at the cricket though. It just doesn't go.

Great result yesterday though, said to my dad just after lunch that it looked like we had no chance of getting the result then Moeen got his first and we really started to beleive from there. Glad to see Finn start to turn his form around.
