Lets not throw this away now. Think that's Vince's time up for a while unless he gets a chance in the 2nd innings. Shane Warne apparently said Moeen should be batting at 4 or 5 with Root now having moved to 3. There's some logic to that. Allows you to play an extra spinner (or seamer) if it comes off.

i think moeen is definitely too far down the order at 8. he's a proper batter. his average would go up if he wasn't always batting with the tail.

woakes could easily bat at 8, or higher

Think that's probably a good shout actually.

Shame ballance walked just before the close. He batted patiently but the jury is is still out as to whether he's going to make it at this level. Ditto Vince. All in all though, an excellent first day. Should be aiming for 500+ from here with plenty of batting still to come. Looking forward to seeing stokes and bairstow bar with that cushion of plenty of runs on the board.

Woakes gets his 50. He is starting to look like a genuine all rounder. Exciting to have him and Stokes in be same team, boosting batting and bowling. Arguably the best night watchman in test cricket too.

They could have had a real go at them under grey skies and drizzle with no time for their batters to settle going off and on. They surely can't win from here. Literally no point in batting on, other then increasing the chances of a draw.

I assumed it must have been to make sure Anderson and Stokes had extra time to recover with them just coming back from injury. Couldn't believe it when Farbrace did his interview with Ward and said it was to make sure we didn't put ourselves under any pressure and have to play on a pitch that was breaking up. How much pressure could we have ever been under with that lead? Ridiculous. Almost want it to rain to show them how ridiculous it was.

Absolutely correct decision with over 2 days left, only way you could lose from that position is to enforce follow on and end up chasing a score on the worst of the pitch. You can't play for rain. Bat on hour or so today and then finish them off over rest of today/tomorrow and as a bonus you've made their bowlers really toil. If there'd only been a day and half left, different story.

There arguably wasn't enough time in the game for them to have lost given the time Pakistan would have had to have batted for to set up an awkward target. I think it's moot anyway as they'll win and would've won if they'd enforced the follow-on yesterday. Can see the logic either way but I think it was the right decision. Why even give Pakistan a glimmer of hope? This way you put more pressure on them because it's virtually impossible for them to win and they still have to bat for 5-ish sessions to save the match. I don't see that as negative at all. It's what the great Aussie sides would've done.

there's no way they would have chased down 391

yes, it looks like cook and root are having a race to the ton, which is all good fun, but they're eating into the time left to bowl them out and there's rain forecast tomorrow.

there is no way on earth pakistan are going to come out to try and chase down this total. they'll play for the draw and will be lucky to secure it, so why give them more of a chance to do so by limiting the time we have to bowl at them?

if they win, they'll be able to say they were vindicated but i don't see any logic in this at all other than boosting their averages. they might have been better off putting vince and ballance in to try to boost their confidence a bit if they just fancied a spot of batting practice
