David Kelly 1224
I agree. I just noticed he'd got 174 the other day so assumed he'd be being talked up.
Alex 34954
He's only just turned 34. Normally I'd agree but it's such a young side I don't think he should be discounted as a relatively short-term fix. Loads of batsmen down the years have performed well into their late 30s and beyond. If he's in form I'd be inclined to pick him.

Dr Gloom 21868
Picking up from where we left off last summer but this time root goes as well so someone else will have to dig us out of a hole for once

David Kelly 1224
It's shocking how many times we end up a hundred for five and have to rely on someone (usually Root) to dig us out of a hole. Hopefully Hales can dig in for a century, it could be a massive moment for him.
Alex 34954
250 might be a decent score like.
David Kelly 1224
It's interesting looking at the form of some of our batsmen so far this county season. Hales & Compton have done nothing and Root scored very little in the first match he played in (scored 200 in the next mind). And Finn has scored more than Stokes this season. Whereas Bairstow got a 180 and a 200 and he's looking in good nick here so far.
Dr Gloom 21868
Bit of chat earlier on TMS on whether Barstow, the form England batsman, should move up the order as a specialist and bring back Buttler as wickie at 7.
Dr Gloom 21868
Hales looked much more acomplished outside off stump but Sri Lanka aren't exactly South Africa in the pace department. Their medium pacers for their wickets by just pitching it up.

He was probably the only batsman who didn't get out by just playing a shit shot yesterday but a duck certainly keeps the pressure on him. I'd be surprised if they made any undforced changes before the next test but their sure to be keeping an eye on him. They could move Vince up to 3 and put Bairstow in at 5. Mind you Butler's done hardly any keeping recently so it wouldn't be ideal to bring him straight back into the test team.
Dr Gloom 21868
It does seem a waste to have the form batsman coming in so far down the order. He looks a totally different player to the one who first broke into the side. Where Buttler could just come and have a dart at 7. Agree Compton under pressure - he needs to do more than just scratch and poke his way to 20 off 100 balls. Edited May 20, 2016 by Dr Gloom

Alex 34954
I like Bairstow as the WK. Seems to be just nailing down the position and we need some stability in the batting order. I appreciate the arguments for moving him up though but Buttler has failed to convince as a test batsman. Early in his career I know but I just think Bairstow should be given a run there. Also I know his county form has been great but I think it's worth remembering he's also kept wicket (albeit batting at 5 I think). I think there's something to the theory that, a bit like being an all-rounder, having a second string to your bow takes some of the pressure off your batting. Especially at test level. I don't think he's really looked the part coming in higher up the order in test matches as a specialist batsman either. tl/dr, if it ain't broken, don't fix it
David Kelly 1224
I suppose the counter to that would be that something is broken in the top order that regularly leaves us 50 for 3 and 100 for 5. Compton and Hales are obviously the ones under pressure. If they can't do it then you have to look at who can. Butler is the one who is in and around the squad who could come in. If not you're looking at bringing back one of the discarded players like Bell or Balance or looking to uncapped players like Rushworth?

I don't think too much should be read into wickets going down in a rush in the first test of the summer though. Was definitely bowler friendly conditions even if there were a few iffy shots. Back to the point, the way I see it is the suggestion might work but if you move Bairstow up the order and he's less comfortable there and Buttler still doesn't look the part then you've turned one problem into two. The thing about Bairstow and Buttler though is that they're both fantastic fielders too so it gives the option of playing either as a specialist. Think we need to persevere with the batting line-up picked for this series at least either way.

Hales is only in his second series (and SA away was hardly a gentle introduction for him even if they did have injuries) and I don't think Compton did as bad as some seem to be suggesting. I think they need to be given at least this series.
