Dr Gloom 22176
Yes, he did bat at 3 a lot, but he batted at 4 a lot more. Gower batted at 3 a lot too, but he got more runs batting at 4. I agree it's a crucial position, but it's also a specialist position, a bit like opening. I feel Root has found his natural place in the side. I'd rather not tinker with a position where there isn't a problem. Fair enough. I suggested root mainly because of his form and the fact that the form batters on the fringes of getting a call up - the likes of bairstow - are aggressive lower middle order players. I'm struggling to think who else could do a job at three but I'm starting to think balance isn't up for it. Ironically, for Yorkshire Balance usually plays at 5 and Root at
Tooj 17
I know he's in shite form but move Bell up to three in the short term and explain to him how important he is to the team and his experience is vital which is why he is going there.

He's another one who's never done well at three compared to lower in the order but you could be on to something there if they do decide to drop balance. See if the added responsibility forces him to bat sensibly. Though it would of course open the door to piers Morgan leading the bring back KP fanfare, as his favourite number 4 position would be up for grabs. I've got a feeling that's going to happen anyway after today.
Ausman 0
Yeah. Don't worry Gloomy Aussies will still win 4-1. You pommie bastards have been screwing us for 150 years now. At 1/350 I'm an Aussie again by the way. Good on ya Bro.

Dr Gloom 22176
Interesting debate on Sky now about the future of test cricket and trying to keep audiences outside England and Australia interested. Beefy hammering the type of pitches we are preparing for Ashes tests. Holding saying scrap the toss and allow the visiting team to decide whether they bat or bowl, which would then put the groundsmen under pressure to create pitches like the one at Lords for the NZ test, and a proper contest between bat and ball. Dr Gloom 22176
Good session. Pitch still looking placid. Shame stokes played on. Another century partnership and we have a chance of saving it. Need cook to carry his bat
Tooj 17
Amazing piece during lunch about the Windies pace attack in its heyday. Still maintain that (I'm 30) Curtly is still the best pace bowler I've seen in my time since watching cricket as a bairn.

Dr Gloom 22176
Tits, Cook goes, dragging on four short of a ton and with the new ball just around the corner. He was the glue holding this fragile innings together. Chances of avoiding the follow on look bleak now
toonotl 3114
I think Australia will come and go ballistic in the morning and declare at lunch around 480 in front. Then you guys have got to try and hold out for 5 sessions. What does the weather look like?

Dr Gloom 22176
It was forecast to rain earlier in the week but the weather gods are shining on the Aussies now, it seems. The Aussies will probably give themselves five sessions to bowl is out, at two wickets a session, i fancy their chances, even on a docile pitch. England 'shot themselves in the foot' with pitch. http://m.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/33583183
toonotl 3114
I think England still have a chance of holding on. The pitch is holding together pretty well and as long as Cook hangs tough the rest could go with him. Good thing there's a week long break after this game because I have a feeling the Aussies are going to need to bowl a lot of overs to win this match. Dr Gloom 22176
I'm not sure we have batters (Cook aside) capable of occupying the crease for 5 sessions. So if he goes cheaply, we're toast. You need an atherton or collingwood mentality for this type of match saving innings
