oh dear balance. he looks vulnerable when it's pitched up. i don't think he's number 3 quality.

root is our best batter and ought to be number 3. there's the argument that he's doing well at 5 so why promote him, but i don't think balance is the answer at that slot.

You pick a different batsman, you don't move someone averaging 70 at number 5.

steve smith was promoted up the order for the aussies to three after a golden couple of years. doesn't seem to have done him any harm.

And Root has struggled when he's batted up the order.

what number did brian lara bat at?

He batted at 4 much more often than he batted at 3 in tests so I'm not sure what your point is meant to be there.

my point is three is a crucial position and you want your best batter playing there, or one of your best. balance does not look like a three to me. his footwork isn't up to it.

So why did you pick a batsman, one of the all time greats, who scored the vast majority of his runs and centuries batting at number 4 in tests (and was the best batsman in his team throughout his career) to illustrate your point that the best batsman bat at 3? Because that was the point you were attempting to make, if you care to check.

he batted at three loads, as did ricky ponting, as did david gower, as does hashim amla etc etc.

the point is it's a key position and you want one of your most accomplished batters there.

Yes, he did bat at 3 a lot, but he batted at 4 a lot more. Gower batted at 3 a lot too, but he got more runs batting at 4. I agree it's a crucial position, but it's also a specialist position, a bit like opening. I feel Root has found his natural place in the side. I'd rather not tinker with a position where there isn't a problem.

howay then, let's see the stats. i remember him batting at 3 loads for the windies. i might be wrong, and he may have played at 4 more, but even if i am wrong, the point is remains. it's one of the most crucial positions in the batting lineup, at test level you want one of your best players there, and currently that player does not looks like it should be gary balance

There you go.

Regardless, perhaps we can agree that the bowling attack helped paper over a few cracks in the batting lineup in the Cardiff match?

We have an exciting and aggressive middle order but there are question marks over Lyth and Balance being good enough in their current positions - and over whether Bell's best days are behind him.
