Dr Gloom 21760
oh dear balance. he looks vulnerable when it's pitched up. i don't think he's number 3 quality. root is our best batter and ought to be number 3. there's the argument that he's doing well at 5 so why promote him, but i don't think balance is the answer at that slot. Dr Gloom 21760
there's certainly a case against balance staying in that slot.

You pick a different batsman, you don't move someone averaging 70 at number 5.

Alex 34725
what number did brian lara bat at? He batted at 4 much more often than he batted at 3 in tests so I'm not sure what your point is meant to be there.

So why did you pick a batsman, one of the all time greats, who scored the vast majority of his runs and centuries batting at number 4 in tests (and was the best batsman in his team throughout his career) to illustrate your point that the best batsman bat at 3? Because that was the point you were attempting to make, if you care to check.

Yes, he did bat at 3 a lot, but he batted at 4 a lot more. Gower batted at 3 a lot too, but he got more runs batting at 4. I agree it's a crucial position, but it's also a specialist position, a bit like opening. I feel Root has found his natural place in the side. I'd rather not tinker with a position where there isn't a problem.

Perhaps I'm remembering him as a number three because he played there more at the backend of his career?
Dr Gloom 21760
Regardless, perhaps we can agree that the bowling attack helped paper over a few cracks in the batting lineup in the Cardiff match? We have an exciting and aggressive middle order but there are question marks over Lyth and Balance being good enough in their current positions - and over whether Bell's best days are behind him.
