Often different pitches at different times in the season though.

yes, but this is barely recognisable from the one in the NZ test. compare one wicket falling in the first day here to 7 down in the first day against NZ. that was a classic lords pitch, a proper pitch if we're honest, which had enough to give the bowlers encouragement but also one where batters could make scores once they got their eye in. this looks like we're set for two first innings scores of over 500, presuming we don't implode.

All I'm saying is the pitch hasn't necessarily been doctored (which I think is what you were inferring, without actually saying as much). That theory is predicated on deliberately producing lifeless pitches which negates Australia's quicks. The problem with that is that even a drawn series would see them retain The Ashes so pitches less likely to get results doesn't favour England anyway. It doesn't fit in with our recent approach to games eirher. And it's not like you can change the nature of a pitch much since the previous test, i.e. look for a draw here after winning the first one. There hasn't been enough time. Not a great cricket wicket but I doubt we'd be moaning if we'd won the toss.

Warnie is hammering England on Sky for ordering these flat pitches to negate Johnson.

And there goes Rogers ... at last.

It does like a little quicker today to be fair. It's carrying at waist height to the keep instead of coming at his ankles.

i think we did exactly that last time the aussies toured here. we produced slow, turning pitches which looked more like you'd find in the subcontinent than typical england pitches, but were ideal for swann and exposed the gulf in class between our spinner and theirs.

the question of whether we've done the same this time around to negate johnson, i guess we'll see as the summer progresses. it may well be the case given how he won the psychological battle with our batters last time around. but it will make for a dull summer of cricket if it turns out to be the case.

That's because the pitches dry out quickly because of the good drainage, which was especially evident late in the summer last time. The good drainage is a money issue as it gets play started much quicker after rain breaks than in years gone by. It's the difference between an abandonment and full refunds or enough play so that isn't necessary (particularly for one day and T/20 games). No conspiracy imo.

no, not an exact science but the groundstaff can definitely play their part in producing wickets to order

ie how much grass to leave on the top (which would help the seamers) etc. the Lords pitch against NZ had a tinge of green and it made for more interesting cricket.

you have to say that the aussies are batting beautifully (warner's moment of madness aside). it must be tempting to go after us with all the runs on the board but they're still only picking off the bad balls. proper test batting. they'll make 600+ if they keep going like this and look to hopefully only bat once in the game

Yeah Smith did this against India here last summer. He just never looked like getting out. His transformation into one of the best batsmen in the world from being a shit house leg spin has been crazy. Bradman-lite.

aussies declare on 566-8. they could have smacked another 50 or so but probably had an eye on sunday's weather forecast.

time for a captain's innings from cook and lyth to drop anchor with him? or the whole lot to fold like a deck of cards?
