Dr Gloom 21760 Posted July 17, 2015 Share Posted July 17, 2015 Often different pitches at different times in the season though. yes, but this is barely recognisable from the one in the NZ test. compare one wicket falling in the first day here to 7 down in the first day against NZ. that was a classic lords pitch, a proper pitch if we're honest, which had enough to give the bowlers encouragement but also one where batters could make scores once they got their eye in. this looks like we're set for two first innings scores of over 500, presuming we don't implode. That theory is predicated on deliberately producing lifeless pitches which negates Australia's quicks. The problem with that is that even a drawn series would see them retain The Ashes so pitches less likely to get results doesn't favour England anyway. It doesn't fit in with our recent approach to games eirher. And it's not like you can change the nature of a pitch much since the previous test, i.e. look for a draw here after winning the first one. Not a great cricket wicket but I doubt we'd be moaning if we'd won the toss. i think we did exactly that last time the aussies toured here. we produced slow, turning pitches which looked more like you'd find in the subcontinent than typical england pitches, but were ideal for swann and exposed the gulf in class between our spinner and theirs. the question of whether we've done the same this time around to negate johnson, i guess we'll see as the summer progresses. it may well be the case given how he won the psychological battle with our batters last time around. but it will make for a dull summer of cricket if it turns out to be the case.
