I hope we manage to find some players from somewhere and that our manager far exceeds my expectations of him. I doubt this will happen though. I really do have my lowest expectations of a coming season for as long as I can remember. And considering Souness was our manager this time last year that is saying something. Thats my honest opinion about the current state of affairs at our club, 6th or 7th........keep sniffing the evo http://www.toontastic.net/board/topic/6846-expectations-for-next-season/?hl=expectations Comparing this to the current "expectations" thread it's interesting how little difference there seems to be between then and now, despite all the talk of lowered expectations attributed to Ashley. Park Life 71
Hope springs eternal. The story of football is one of projection. We see ourselves out there, our legs twitch when a shot just misses goal. That will remain unchanged, when that goes we no longer can say we have a love of the game, its mystique, its Dystopian lure. We await the arrival of a No.9 like we wait for Eastwood to come in on horseback on a rainy night with a full moon and distant splashes of thunder. Football is beyond expectations...It is etched in fantasy. Edited August 19, 2014 by Park Life

David Kelly 1260
If you'd taken predictions from before Souness was installed as manager it would have been very different mind you. But even though the predictions above don't really show it, I don't believe there was the sense of helplesness or the feeling that we could never get back to where we were under Keegan and Robson, that there is now. I don't think there is anyone that thinks that we will realistically compete for anything as long as Ashley's here. People didn't think FS was doing a good job, but they did expect that he would find the money to spend on players, they didn't trust he make a good managerial appointment every time but they thought we could attract a decent manager who wasn't just a puppet and they would never in a million years think we could have appointed JFK in any capacity. The actual league position we were predicting might not be much different to now, but the short to mid term future of the club was light years away,

Happy Face 29
To be fair most of those posts called it just about right. Plenty were over-optimistic. We dropped from a 7th place finish to 13th.

acrossthepond 878
Watched that dogshit, it was fucking dreadful. Roeder was just Hughton without the rapport with players. Both of them still better than Fat Sam though, the fraud.
Alex 35572
Worth pointing out that he massively raised expectations when he brought Keegan in on the proviso that he would have plenty of money to spend.

He got Keegler in as he was still on his local hero trip iirc...Standing with fans etc.. KK was as much undone by Wise and that Spanish bloke as MA. The bad experience and ludicrous dealings of Fat Sam muddied the KK waters and MA was starting to get wary of not keeping an eye on spend and wagers...Must have had a shock at the size of FS's backroom staff and constant demands for chest freezer to put players in or summink. The timing was very unfortunate for us and ulitmately KK. In fact finishing 5th was the time to spend and have a go at CL and we didn't...Which laid the whole 5yr plan claptrap to rest forever. Ah yes, the five year 'plan' (). Let's wind the clock back five years and see what was being said then. “In five years’ time I would hope we would be challenging for everything. http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/mike-ashley-eyes-five-year-plan-1449440 Just a slight deviation from the plan then in that our current stated ambition is to challenge for absolutely nothing. And another link from five years ago with bullshit about how Dennis Wise is staying and the club wants strong links with local press. http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/newcastle-united-md-answers-your-1449436
