Ethical Buying

When it comes to buying stuff, do you just jump on the net (where possible) and get it for the ease, or do you try and use local shops and services where possible? I don't mean popping down to the Tesco Express either.

I have stopped buying meat at the supermarket as we have a great local Butchers. Some of the meat is more expensive, but the majority its cheaper and its great meat. The service you get is more personal and last week, they chucked in a couple of 'freebies'.

I am trying to do this with all my shopping, however we don't have a decent greengrocers near us, so that's a shame, but we do have a good bakers and get my bread and stuff from there.

Last year a cycle shop opened and since then I have tried stopping getting stuff off the net at shops like Wiggle etc and use them. I want a new set of brakes. On the net I can get them for £120, local bike shop, however its £210. Now thats a big difference, but then again, that's with them fitting them, bleeding them etc (I can do myself) so its a job less I have to do and I get a satisfaction knowing I am supporting local business.

One other area I have cut down on and hoping to stop altogether, is Amazon. I do not like their approach to business and zero hour contracts.

Anyone else do similar?

I do the majority of my shopping in supermarkets out of laziness and because I like to get as much as possible in one go, but I do use the various shops in the Grainger Market regularly as well.

I'd love to say I have done this, but the price differences between buying in store, and the entertainment implicit in having some bloke in Swansea walk the length of three football pitches down a warehouse aisle to fetch it for me, is too much to pass up.

I buy lots of fruit and veg from the local market, but only because it's nearby and considerably cheaper than the supermarket, which suggests that there probably isn't much ethical about where the traders are getting their produce from.

Bloody Commie!

I buy from wherever's cheapest/easiest, unless I want something a bit higher quality in which case I'll occasionally use a butcher. Not because of ethics though.

Think if you really want to sacrifice your money to be more ethical you'd be better off saving that 10% or whatever you do by using supermarkets/amazon and giving it to a decent charity than some bloke who owns a shop.

I also support local charities. I give any unwanted clothes to them and I also help out at my local charities.

Went to the local fruit and veg shop to buy some asparagus when the British stuff was in season. The stuff they had in was Peruvian

Aye, thats another thing I look for when buying fruit and veg in the supermarket. Its all bloody South African or the like!

If we're having a "Special" meal I'll go to a nearby high street that's out my way, but it's got 2 really good butchers (I was told one of them supplies the meat for some of the really good steak restaurants in London, whatever that's worth), a decent fishmonger and a superb cheese... monger? Shop. A really good cheese shop.

If I'm making a bolognese for a Thursday night, I won't.

I've never met a nice South African apple.
