I think this is the most exciting development in gaming since online multiplayer and possibly the most groundbreaking technology in gaming ever. Because a mate of mine is making it, I have had a go on this racing game and it was mind blowing. It's basically just a 3D Wipeout in VR, but the sensation of being immersed in another world was complete and looking about to see upcoming turns and boosts completely changes gaming. The surrealism of being in another world with such ease was reminiscent of a drug experience. Never mind Ketamine, get yourself in a VR-hole. I have had a go on a couple of the horror/creepy games and they are pretty good too. The Omni is a bit scary, but perhaps it will have health benefits. I think Oculus are going to struggle, they have been terrible at keeping people up to date, have now been bought out by the dreaded facebook and it is far more likely you are going to want to sit on your sofa (next to your console) to go VR than sit at your PC - so I am looking forward to see how Morpheus goes. Andrew 4855 Posted January 5, 2016 Share Posted January 5, 2016 I don't think it's going to happen as a big general public phenomenon.I agree with Ant on 3D, people don't like having to stick a thing on their face unless they are already well in the geek/gaming ecosystem, your casual CoD/Fifa player or the social media gamers (who make up the majority of those spending) won't give a shit beyond possibly the novelty early on. The only game I've seen show off the Oculus Rift is Minecraft and the Wipeout-esque game above. Do you lot think it will be similar God-games, or will the technology be able to manage frenetic games like COD, or the like? I'm not saying I don't think they're pretty cool but they won't catch on with the general public after the novelty factor wears off. Their application is too specific. I watched a youtube of Microsoft using their "Hololens" to play Minecraft and I was impressed, but guessed the application of the Rift would be fairly limited? I don't think they will. At the end of the day its a new type of monitor that can only be viewed by one person at a time. There aren't tons of applications for that. As a man who hates socialising unless it suits me, this suits me to the ground; I'll watch all my films and TV in VR, listen to music while accompanied by a Rez-style interface, take virtual tours of places I'll never visit, enjoy POV porn in a whole new way. Andrew 4855 Posted January 6, 2016 Share Posted January 6, 2016 The problem with most of those applications is that a screen works just as well.The mars thing for example, curiosity has a camera that you pan, it has one lense, why is VR better than a screen that multiple people can see and costs a fraction of the price?
