Lets sign a 29 year old left back who has started less than 10 games in the last 2 years.

Thats not proven premier league quality anymore.

What's being 29 got to do with it? Our team needs men not boys thats why our seasons keep collapsing

I think this is something that's very wrong with our signing profile. Keegan knew the value of having experienced players which was why he turned to players like Sheedy, Kilkline, Bracewell, Venison and of course Beardsley. You can do well with kids as Man Utd proved but they had them playing with some senior players too to help them through. Colo is really our only senior pro now and his desire to fight for the cause has to be questioned.

That's all fair enough and I never expected anything better than what we've had so far (in fact I expected less) but to say we've addressed our key weaknesses isn't correct when it looks like there's a fair chance Williamson will at least be on the bench come the Southampton game, we have no proper cover for Janmaat and our leftback is much weaker than our rightback. If we had addressed all of our weaknesses this would not be the case. Of course there is still time to fix this before the window is shut. I neither expect this to happen (at least not all of it) nor will I go mental if it doesn't.

Didn't say that though. Replacing that useless arsehole and his coterie is huge. McClaren is a gardener, nurturing budding talent and bending boughs to his whim! Pardew would pour concrete over the lot and only the exceptional would break through.

;)

In all seriousness though, I believe we'll see improved performances from fringe players and a much better cohesion throughout the squad. We still need personnel, but existing playing staff may surprise you.

Not Williamson though.

He's irrecoverably, irredeemably shit.

I don't think Gini really fits into that bracket. He's quite young but really he's at an age you would be happy go for. Potentially he can deliver a freekick too. Although I think the general coaching will improve us there.

Would have Enrique back in a shot

:aye:

Our set piece issue hasn't been addressed either. Something Cabaye would have sorted. It's jut the same old buy kids we can resell policy

:dunno:

Our set piece issue was more about the repeated attempts to find a tall man at the back post with a floated ball.

Can't imagine any other coach would persist with something like that. With a change or routines we might see better deliveries from Colback et al?

Nah we'll be all right. Too much utter dogshit in the league for us to be really troubled. Promoted 3 are uninspiring, Villa & sunderland haven't bought well and barely survived last year, Leicester have gambled on Ranieri. We've addressed our key weakness.

Am I reading your last line there incorrectly then?

Gk, RB, LB, RW, LW

Name the quality options we have for those positions that isnt playing someone put of position. Krul, Janmaat then I'm struggling. Along with the lack of experienced or leader types and our crap set pieces I think the enthusiasm could drain out quickly into the new season

Instead of signing Austin, would we be better off taking Balotelli and Enrique on loan and use the money for Austin on a proven CB?

We wouldn't pay their wages but I would go for it other than that. Whether they'd come or not is another matter

Yeah forgot about that but the bin dippers are so keen to get them both out of the squad I don't doubt they's take a deal where they part pay their wages.

I think Balotelli would because he'd like to stick it to Rogers, Enrique was keen to get away from fat Mike's lot so you are probably right about him. Does he still have a Geordie girlfriend as that might help sway things?

Enrique could do a job as CB as well now he's older.

Think I was more worried than excited when we were linked with Ballotelli. Too much baggage imo

Loan deal with a fuckwit clause would make it a win win bet. You can bet he'd score against citeh and the dippers for fun.

So you believe our defence will be fine just on the basis of McClaren, Cathro and the other bloke who's name escapes me?

That's a CT level of fairy tale!

 Given that's nothing like the thing I actually said, I'd say that, no, that's not what I believe.

Enrique's injuries would make me reluctant to sign him. He was my favourite player so that's difficult to say. They will really have impacted on his acceleration and speed which was a key to his strength as a fullback (that and his strength/balance).

So do you bleive that our defence has been a key weakness and if so has it been addressed?

I believe the key weakness (our coaching staff) has been addressed, that doesn't mean they will suddenly transform Williamson into Baresi, nor does it mean that I think our defence isn't a significant weakness.

Just a quick one. Why "believe" instead of "think"?

Obviously if you had spelled it correctly.

It was just what came in to me head (although it came correctly spelt, my fingers obviously fucked that up). I'm not sure if one is more correct than the other. English language was never one of my strongest subjects at school.

So you think the coaching staff was a bigger weakness than our defence. I suppose I'd have to agree with that because I said all along I wouldn't renew my ticket if Carver was still in charge. But defence is the key weakness on the pitch and an area we haven't fully addressed transfer wise. This being a transfer thread I assumed that's what we were talking about.

I know exactly what you mean but I think it's actually a dangerous word and it's structure and definition allows implications to be attached to its use which it is harder to do with the word, think.
