We'll only get a couple of years out of him before he starts declining, and it'll take probably a full season for him to get up to speed anyway. The early appointment of managing director Lee Charnley is understood to have been part of a desire to make swift progress on the recruitment front this summer. And while the statement put out to accompany Charnley’s appointment was cautious, there are funds available and a determination to alter the shape of a squad that has grown stale. United have begun negotiations with Tenerife over young forward Perez – who would cost around £2m – and are also hoping to broker a deal for Lacazette, who would be ablue-chip addition to Newcastle’s ranks. Alternative targets have been sourced, and United are understood to have been sounded out about interest in Joel Campbell, the Arsenal striker currently on loan at Greek side Olympiacos. The Journal also understands that Alan Pardew’s injury crisis will be eased by the much-anticipated return of Loic Remy this weekend, while goalkeeper Tim Krul could also be in contention for the trip to Stoke City. That is a much-needed blast of positivity after a horrendous run of results that has seen criticism once again aimed at the club. The nature of Newcastle’s performances in a pair of 4-0 reverses against Southampton and Manchester United in particular have seen Pardew’s stock plummet with certain supporters. Reports of a bust-up with Hatem Ben Arfa after the game have also added to the feeling that a shake-up is needed at Newcastle. But those heavy defeats havenot dented Mike Ashley’s belief in Pardew as the man to turn it around, and the appointment of Lee Charnley as managing director this week has strengthened the manager’s hand and also been seen as a positive development inside St James’ Park. Charnley may have stated that the club intend to bring in just “one or two” players this summer but The Journal understands there are significant funds to reshape the squad this summer and work is already under way to recruit over the close season. Several first-team ready players are being scouted and the influx of players should give the squad a new look next season. While United want to add players capable of coming into the team and making an impact they will also look to add fringe options who are capable of challenging the first team and Perez, who might cost as little as £1.5million, would be seen as one of those. The 20-year-old is not an orthodox striker but he certainly knows where the back of the net is, having notched 10 times in 18 games for Tenerife in Spain’s second division this year. Lacazette would require a much more significant outlay, with the 22-year-old reportedly attracting interest from Arsenal, Liverpool and Juventus.
