I'm typing this poolside in Gran Canaria. We've never done a sun holiday at this time of year before because the prices are generally ridiculous as everyone has the same idea (and indeed Gatwick yesterday was chaos, 30-minute queues just to get into Wagamama and all), but I'm a couple of hours into a good book and the weight of the world is already starting to lift. Dust off the fedora and get on it next year, you won't regret it.

Aye, a holiday between January and April is a good shout. We've got a week all inclusive in Turkey coming up in April. I'd rather have it in January or February but I refuse to drop £2k on a holiday and not come home with some semblance of a tan!

Nothing wrong with me but I hate this time of year. The main event is over and NYE is for the young and it’s just an endless period of people being off with nowt much to do and crappy weather.

Everything is a little out of sync and I don’t like it.  Bored with food, bored with football on the wrong days, bored with bin men on the wrong days. Roll on Spring

I quite like the break and the kids are still at school. The youngest two still believe in Santa, possibly for the last year. So it’s nice spending a bit of time with them and so on. Went for a few drinks with Tooj last night. Good chance to catch up. But despite having plenty leave left and there being cover I’m going into work. I’m off later in the week but I just fancied going into work to do some of the stuff I never normally get the chance to do. But also to have a break from the eating and drinking. Like you I just get a bit bored of it all

Had my brother and his family over yesterday afternoon/night.

Woke up today, cleared up, and just putting the finishing touches to another fucking Christmas buffet for Mrs. F’s mates and partners and kids who are due in half an hour.

I’m looking forward to doing the square root of fuck-all tomorrow.

Volume is another factor too. You can’t just kill multiple people at a party and not expect to get caught.

Anyone got any experience of private healthcare?
My mother is 85, and has a gradually worsening gastrointestinal problem which is yet to be definitively diagnosed.

Briefly, over the past year she’s started being unable to keep any food down, and is also having intense abdominal pain.
From an occasionally occurring thing, it’s now pretty much constant and it’s really getting her down- she’s lost 2 stone, rarely goes out, and has an incredibly restricted diet of food she can sometimes keep down.

She’s been for numerous scans and tests, which have ruled out lots of causes, but is yet to pinpoint the actual cause.

She’s asked me to look in to a private consultation as she’s utterly miserable and just wants some kind of resolution.

I’ve not got the first idea where to start the process, or indeed if it’s worth going private?

I know that’s pretty vague, not after a diagnosis from you lads, rather some direction to get the ball rolling.

Most of the time they will want a referral from the GP. If you get a referral, then all you have to do after that is ring the Nuffield and book an appointment.

You'll need to take your referral letter or they might ask for it to be emailed to them in advance.

I think there are some consultants that will see you without a referral, but it's rare. You could ring the Nuffield and ask if they have any consultants that would do that.

There's also the Spire in Washington if you want to check both.

@Monkeys Fist Sorry to hear your Mam's troubles, mate. It's a bit disappointing they can't pinpoint it up till now and this age can tough, you worry about your kids, they grow up then you have to start all over again worrying about elderly parents. Hope it's sorted for her soon and sorry I don't really have any advice from experience for you.

Is a holistic GP a thing in England?

Since being diagnoised with an auto immune I'm amazed how complicated the gut is and how little actually GPs know about it.

Holistic GP tend to look more for the cause, oppposed to just trying to patch you up, in my experience.

Things like leaky gut, SIBO and food intolerences are far more common than we realise and although not as easily fixed as a course of antibiotics, can be helped with a mixture of food/lifestyle changes and medication.

Just a though and hope your mum gets it sorted MF, it's fucking dire when all you feel is sick and pain.

Ah Fist man hope you get your mam sorted. I've gone private a few times due to my wife insurance. Like Gemmill said just need a referral letter.

Like Sammy said the gut is so complicated and connects to so much stuff it's mad. Even psychologically.
