Gastroenteritis, still fucking got it and I'm on a week's 'holiday' now and it's completely ruined the plans for my youngest daughter's 18th tomorrow which she's been looking forward to for ages. Gutted.

That's bad craic like, and a bad arse crack too :rimshot:

Inspired by last week’s eruption in Walkergate, I went down the rabbit of one of my favourite subjects- volcanoes.

Found this picture of Mt.St.Helens erupting, taken from Mt. Adams.
IMG_0286.jpeg.09281e3c53e04d81f9418ec21c13e077.jpeg

There’s just seconds between the two photos.

Also, Mt. Adam’s is almost 40 miles away from Mt. St. Helens.

I remember those exact photos from the National Geographic in 1980 (I think). It spewed 20 cm of ash for hundreds of miles around. Scary thing is its not a particularly powerful expolosion as far as these type of volcanoes go.

HMHM, if you're ill on your a/l, make sure you get HR told, becauseit needs to be classified as illness and for you to get your a/l back. Hope it goes as well as it can for you anf your family tomorrow, at least the weather is good (even here).

Man, that's shite.  On a selfish note I feel a lot better  lad at work is off with it apparently.  Seemed fine Fri, Sat & Sun when he was sending pissed up photos on the WhatsApp group though

One thing for me though.  The thought of any alcohol or coffee makes me gip.  I haven't drank much alcohol since my seizure in Belgium anyways.  I had a few glasses of wine over a long period a few weeks back and a couple of pints at a game another time.  Other than that I am just not boozing.  The coffee thing is weird.  I just can't face it.

Isn’t there one in Yellowstone with the potential to be much larger?

That's the dilemma. As part of the closure negotiation we've got a 'retention bonus' on top of the redundancy. I'm just trying to clarify if I'd be better off taking the hit with the holidays or not but the lad I want to talk to is the factory cat and was probably blobbing last night so don't want to wake him up in case he doesn't have his phone on silent. (I'm nice like that).

@wykikitoon I'd be fucked at your place.....

HR: "I see t'HMHM is off with t'evil shites and rotten gut."

Wykiki: "Fook all wrong with lad, wa playing five a side yesterday then out all day on piss. Not for me to say, like, but I'd be tekking lad off sick pay scheme, giving him final warning and giving him all the shit jobs for next month if I were you. But like I say, it's not for me to say."

Yeah. In fact the whole of Yellowstone NP is a volcano. It's bulging upward about 15cm a year I believe. When it goes it will take out everything west of the Rockies. Iirc it's not expected for a few 10,000s of years though.

 Not to mention that the only reason the poor fella is laid up with the shits is because Wyki came into work while sick and spread it round the place.

I'm sure as an engineer you'll understand these predictions are inherently subject to a lot of uncertainty and I think it erupting now is probably in the 95% CI range? Certainly, I know some geologists are alrmed by just how fast the ground is rising. That's the best thing about the UK. No extreme weather, earthquakes, volcanoes, likelihood of tsunami, or dangerous wildlife.

There are signs Betelgeux is imminently going to go super nova. It's 600 light years away which means it won't harm the Earth but will be utterly spectacular, visible during the day for a year or so. Might already have happened (as we are seeing in as it was in the 14th century). But this is where our puny human life spans are a pisser compared to geological scales, very unlikely to happen before we're all deed.

We need Betelgeuse to wait until winter to go boom, so that it’s visible in the night sky.

Yellowstone can wait a few thousand, cheers.

It's quite the sight even now, as if somebody took a saw to a bloody 8000 ft mountain. And you can still find ashes on the forest floor around the site.

The nearby volcanoes around Portland and Seattle (12000 and 14000 feet iirc) are supposedly active/potentially active  :quotes: And it all sits on (or near?) the Cascadia subduction zone, the one that will drop the west coast into the ocean once the 'big one' finally hits. Everyone's heard of San Andreas but it's not nearly as potent.

Mt. Rainier, is still classed as active, even though it’s last eruption was 1000yrs ago.
It’s fucking huge.

A brief google will tell you that Seattle is in no danger from an eruption, but I remember reading about the lahars* that Rainier would produce ( and has in the past), and I’d be keeping a keen eye on it if I was living in Grungetown

* massive rivers of mud and rocks made by all the snow melting.

Actually, here’s the article.

https://www.kuow.org/stories/what-will-happen-when-mount-rainier-erupts#

The bit that makes me laugh is that there’s a town near it that’s built on old lahars.

They’ll get a 40 minute warning to make like Pierce Brosnan and skedaddle.

Oh aye lahars. Dunno why'd you give a French sounding name to something so destructive.

Explosive bastards or not this created a longing for mountains I'd shoved back. Bloody Texas. Spent plenty a summer in the North of Pakistan where Ranier would be absolutely dwarfed. The Pacific North West is still of course absolutely beautiful, despite English levels of rain. Bloody freaking Texas man.

I just had to find out.

“The word lahar is of Javanese origin. Berend George Escher introduced it as a geological term in 1922.”

Funnily enough, his first name is very rude in Japanese.
