The Fish 10972
Well the architecture is similar, yes. Same applies to all the Cyclades though really. Santorini is canny different to Mykonos apart from that though. Even in terms of appearance. The former is built on the spectacular remains of a ancient volcano. The caldera edge faces west so you get amazing sunsets all along it and all the settlements on the west side of the island look over steep cliffs which isn't the case with Mykonos. You also said they were basically the same (without alluding specifically to the appearance) which is also incorrect given Mykonos is world famous for its party scene whereas Santorini is a much more laid back, couples and families type of place. but apart from all that, they're identical. The pictures were in response to your comment that they don't look alike. Mykonos is only a party Island in the summer, out of season it's all old folks and couples. We can disagree, it's allowed

Anorthernsoul 1221
Is it safe to go to Greece?...These apartments look really cheap. Some of my family are in Lindos and apparently nothing has changed for anyone there, even taking card payments. The smaller islands won't feel the repercussions till at least the winter months due to the shear amount of tourism in the summer. So it is still very much party time. PaddockLad 17698
The current Mrs PL changed job 3 weeks ago which put paid to our planned 2 week early July shenanigans. We hadn't booked anything but we were looking forward to a cheapish pre school holiday 10 day piss up somewhere semi classy, Amalfi Coast was looking favourite. Her new employers have turned round and (generously?) said she can have the last week in July off paid so we've spent the last week looking at what we can get....best value flying locally we could find was a week in Alicante....anybody been lately?...it actually looks ok, or better than what I imagined it would be i.e. full English available in every other shop doorway, in betweenall the straw donkey peddlars etc etc...it appears to be quite cultural, with quite a few museums and a fairly lively old town etc etc.. Park Life 71
Go to the South where all the Moorish architecture is and the food is quite different. Castles and shit everywhere... Actually it's where I should be going not fucking Greece. Edited July 7, 2015 by Park Life
PaddockLad 17698
We've booked Alicante now, it was the cheapest and we just want to chill for a week. We almost went to Granada and Cordoba last December for a winter break to see the Alhambra and all that stuff. Tbf Alicante has got a Moorish castle and the Cathedral used to be a mosque so its not without its historical stuff

Meenzer 15737
We went to Alicante for 4-5 days a few years back and it's not bad at all. Attractive old town, decent food, a bit of cultural stuff there if you want it, a good-sized beach with sunbed/chair hire, plenty of shopping over in the "real" city centre including a big branch of El Corte Inglés, plus a healthy slice of tourist bars/Sky TV/karaoke grot if you do want to dip your toes into that after all. Just don't be concerned by the folks you see on the plane and at the airport - they're probably going to Benidorm......

ChezGiven 0
Don't think you would meet any animosity whatsoever being German on holiday in Greece. One of the managers from the German team was there earlier this year, not a problem. Greek people are lovely and as a tourist you are going to be meeting people who depend on tourism for their livelihood and everyone of them is going to be delighted to see you.
