Meenzer 15742
To get Hinkley off the ground the energy department had to promise to pay investors a guaranteed, index-linked “strike price” of £92 per megawatt hour, or double the current market price, and do so for an incredible 35 years. It had to pretend to Brussels this was not a subsidy because consumers, not taxpayers, were the ones being ripped off. It also had to pretend that guarantees were not subsidies. The Chinese wanted not just a return of 10% but a guarantee of 10%. Osborne has in effect borrowed £2bn for Britain from China at five times the cost of public sector bonds. Crikey. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/sep/23/hinkley-point-squandermania-george-osborne-china?CMP=share_btn_tw

Gemmill 46141
Except the deficit jumped up again in the latest figures and earlier readings were also revised upwards. This bloke is a fucking cowboy achieving none of what he set out to do and yet none of the mainstream press seems to be reporting it.
JJ 0
It's quite amazing that the Tories still have the reputation of being the party of fiscal responsibility. I know a compliant media is half the battle (if not all) but it's getting ridiculous.
PaddockLad 17718
Trying telling anyone who gives a shit. That is the real disgrace. Read Monbiot at the weekend...he says the Hinkley design is fundamentally flawed..EDF are building two the same on the continent and having proper grief. The whole national nuclear project, although being precisely what the country needs for future energy needs, is a fuckin disaster. Howmanheyman 33931
Aye, the real bosses in this country are the union 'barons'. Not the actual barons, lords and old Etonian wankers.

Dr Gloom 22188
interesting quotes from the new shadow chancellor's conference address: “We are embarking on the immense task of changing the economic discourse in this country. We are throwing off that ridiculous charge that we are deficit deniers,” “We are saying, tackling the deficit is important but we are rejecting austerity as the means to do it. We are setting out an alternative based upon dynamically growing our economy, ending the tax cuts for the rich and addressing the scourge of tax evasion and avoidance.”

Gemmill 46141
From a focus group that Labour have held: Mattinson says people do not know much about Corbyn. They are not even sure what it means when it is said he is leftwing. And they had heard he supports the IRA; they don’t like that, she says. She says they liked the new way he did PMQs. But they thought Corbyn looked a bit scruffy. And a bit old-fashioned. One person said he looked as though he did not own an iPad. That was not intended as a compliment. Honestly, this country deserves the politicians it gets. Edited September 28, 2015 by Gemmill

Dr Gloom 22188
McDonnell's speech being criticised for being light on actual policy. Nice to hear a genuine alternative argument though even if it was lacking precise detail of how it'll all be implemented. Real battle now is to unite the parliamentary party and start trying to win the public debate, all while preparing for osborne's political traps and the inevitable warfare from Murdoch and friends. Good luck with that Jezza
