I don't see what the problem is in principle with having people who have been claiming the dole for over two years engage in community service or extra training.

I think the option of having to visit the job centre daily is ridiculous, as is the idea that this plan should continue ad infinitum for those unable to get work.

Nine months I read.

Nine months I read.

It's actually three years as I understand it. After one year of unemployment you're put on the Work Programme and after a further two years you're on the 'Help to Work' scheme.

I'm not sure how this is going to work for people in rural areas, are they going to get travel expenses paid for traveling to the job centre every day for the pointless exercise ever devised by the government?

Also, the Daily Mail once again acting as a bastion of fair and even handed journalism:

Yeah his dad hated this country...from the article:

Ralph Miliband then served three years in the Royal Navy, returning when the war was over to his studies at the LSE, and within a few years was teaching there himself.

Nice to see the politics of hate espoused by the likes of CT alive and well at the Tory conference. So the long term unemployed are now literally being criminalized by forcing them into community service. How can anyone not see what this is is beyond me. The problem we have is lack of jobs, particularly in the North. Unemployment is horrible, can affect anyone, and is ever prevalent in younger groups, the vast majority of whom I'm sure want to work rather than exist in perpetual penury and boredom. The government should be trying to create real jobs rather than punish the casualties of their corrupt policies.

I'm no Tory fan boy but what exactly is the problem with those who are unemployed for over three years being forced to either do something to help themselves or giving back to the community? The idea that this is criminalising the unemployed is ridiculous, they're not going to be forced into orange jump suits and chained together. They're not being forced to work full time as slave labour, they're simply being asked to do something, what's the problem with that?

And for the record, the option to sign on every day is fucking ridiculous.

They're not getting paid to do it, they'll be told to do it or starve. It's exactly the type of work that you get on community service.

If it's not slave labour, why not pay minimum wage for it?

I also note that the 'mentally ill' are listed as a target group. Having a mentally ill family member who is very vulnerable, I can't begin to tell you how disgusting this rhetoric is.

I haven't seen anything about the mentally ill, as far as I've read it's aimed purely at those on JSA.

And the point is that they'll be undertaking these activities in return for their dole money, I'd imagine it'll work out at well above minimum wage, we're not talking about them being forced to do full time hours, it'll be ten hours a week max. imo.

They haven't announced any details of the policy but I'm a supporter of the majority of it in principle, that's not to say that the implementation of it won't be fucked up.

Where are you getting your facts from? It's 30 hours community service, and people with mental health issues were specifically mentioned.

Jesus, that's absolutely terrible.

I hadn't realised that they had released details of what the programme involved. Getting the mentally ill into a ‘mandatory intensive regime’ shows an ignorance of mental illness. Also, 30 hours of community service or 35 hours in the job centre is a joke. As I said above, I supported the idea in principle but was wary of how it would play out in reality and looks like I was right to be. It sounds to me like this is a ham fisted £300m attempt to force those doing the double off benefits and what the Tories view as a kick up the arse for the lazy wastrels happy to sit around claiming the dole.
