Cletus has just left. When he turned up I had a smart electric meter that could transmit a signal and a smart gas meter that couldnt.

I now have a smart electric meter AND a smart gas meter that can't transmit a signal.

Which was well worth the 2.5 hours sat propping my eyelids open.

I know this election wasn't as simple as 15% of the Conservative vote going to Reform and handing Labour the win without them really making any gains... but what this data does suggest is Labour might have a much tougher job on their hands next time round if (and it's a big if) the right somehow find a way to unite.

It’ll be  nice to have a PM that isn’t an instant embarrassment when meeting other leaders from Europe and elsewhere.

I’ll be intrigued to see how SKS deals with whichever dementia riddled old fool wins in the US.

Pressure mounting on old Joe. I wouldn't be surprised to see him step aside in the next fortnight

If Labour are anything approaching competent and things start to improve for everyone (not just the bankers) next one will be an entirely different kettle of fish, irrespective of what the far right do, if things get better they'll fade away.

What it really shows is an electoral system not fit for purpose. Although that won’t change in the next 5 years because of the size of the majority and because of the time it would take. By the latter i mean parliamentary time and the thousands of civil service man hours it would take. Especially with all the other priorities. However, the only long term way to stop the right is to get a Green/LibDem/Independent/Labour alliance.
A couple of things to note though is the amount of tactical voting and the low turn out.

What are the chances of Farage surviving a second plane crash, do we think?

Wouldn’t that be a shame.

They've got 4 MPs man. The simple reality is that that just gets you very little exposure in Parliament. Their ability to interfere in the actual business of govt is going to be severely restricted - not much more than he has currently by just going on Question Time or whatever.

Im not saying it's nothing btw, it's not nothing. But it's nothing like as big a deal as the way the media went in on it in the hours after the exit poll.

I think it’s less Reform as a political force but more the lurch to the right that will come and grow if things continue in this cycle that I’m concerned about. With the majority Labour have, it should be fairly simplistic to push through what we need but obviously the jury is out. Reform kicked on big in deprived areas by selling easy answers to disillusioned sections of the electorate. That’s what people want to hear when things are crumbling around them. Along with a nice scapegoat to go with it. Maybe it’s the workplaces I frequent but for all the talk of mobilising young, progressive people into voting, if the right can mobilise angry, stupid racists with an axe to grind into voting, you’re on a hiding tto noting unless Labour show something now that they’re in power

Yeah. Voting was low. I think a big proportion of voters just wanted the Tories out rather than being impressed by Labour.  I’m hoping Labour actually start making  noticeable change now they are in power.

If Labour sit on their hands and do nothing for the next 5 years, and you re-run last night's election with a Unite the Right party that could attract all of the votes from both lunatic Reform people AND moderate Tories in the home counties, then yes, Labour would be in trouble.

Basically.. Can we just wait and see what happens. What happens at the next election will depend on many variables, but the biggest of all will be how well the government delivers, and we're on day 0 at the minute and trying to work out what happens 5 years from now.

It's the idiotic political media in this country to blame. They all want to make RED HOT takes the day of the result.

These are the same people who, on the day of the result 5 years ago, had everyone convinced that Labour could just completely forget about regaining power for the next 10 years. And yet here we are.

I've had 1 hour sleep, so if this seems snippy, TOUGH SHIT!

Posted (edited)

I’ve been watching the Hitler documentary (think Renton recommended it) on Netflix and it there are major similarities with the way Farage conducts his business and with the current state of the country.

Saw something which suggested Starmer had chased marginal swing voters while not being too bothered by losing core voters which I think is true and a large part of the story combined with the collapse of the tories and reform actually standing.

Imy concern as I've said before is that he'll have to try and keep those voters on board which will mean more immigration talk and other bollocks because he isn't going to do anything to boost the so called core vote.

I'd also point out that the tory + reform votes actually exceeded labour's total so they'll need to rely on a split vote continuing going forward.

The other thing about the notion of adding the Reform and Tory parties together is that they fucking hate each other at the minute.
