So much for me thinking nobody would want to pick up this poisoned chalice.

This from Sky News

Here it is - Boris Johnson is appointing a new government.

It kicks off with Policing Minister Kit Malthouse being made chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, the most senior minister in the Cabinet Office after the Prime Minister.

Next up is Greg Clark - an ardent remainer - who will take over from Michael Gove as levelling up secretary.

Meanwhile, James Cleverly is going to be education secretary - the third in three days.

Labour going to bring a VOC if Johnson stays on. Still time for more popcorn.

You can guarantee Johnson will want to go nowhere so Starmer better stand by that claim.

He won't but I guess 1922 can still oust him completely. Its crazy to keep Johnson in post.

Either Johnson then resigns or we get a GE.

Of course they would. Quite easily in fact.

All of the "principled socialists" will vote for the Green Party or some utter nonsense and unless there's been a drastic change in policy Labour won't form a coalition.

Absolutely they would. Principled Conservatives have an issue with Boris Johnson as party leader, remove him and they'll almost certainly will vote for his replacement - irrespective of who they are.

A GE right now is not what we need.

This 1230 presser will probably contain what Johnson perceives to be some sort of get out clause…. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that he still thinks he’s going ride it out after a few months, looks like Starmer & the rest of Westminster think that too :cuppa:

But he is that insane and fucking mental. What is happening now is that Johnson is playing for time. He's trying to form a cabinet and hobble through to the Autumn in the hope of a grand comeback. After all that has gone on he still doesn't realise that the game is up.

The only way to get rid of him for sure is for a VONC that the Tories back. However, they certainly won't want a GE so they'll settle on a temporary unity candidate to take the job until a Tory leadership election can be finished and then get the new guy in.

Quote

Sky's political producer Agnes Chambre has been speaking to Tory MPs to gauge the mood in the party on news Boris Johnson is to resign.

Even those who welcome his departure seem worried about what happens next.

One told her: "I think we are f****d. The new leader will need a new mandate, so new election May [2023] latest?"

They added: "25,000 people did not vote Tory in Bolsover, they voted Boris. The red wall is gone. There will be hung parliament."

I think he's very much focused on the fact he's only days away from lasting longer in office than May. It'll fucking wrangle with him if she ends up lasting longer than him.
