I think the option of having to visit the job centre daily is ridiculous, as is the idea that this plan should continue ad infinitum for those unable to get work. Nine months I read. After one year of unemployment you're put on the Work Programme and after a further two years you're on the 'Help to Work' scheme. I'm not sure how this is going to work for people in rural areas, are they going to get travel expenses paid for traveling to the job centre every day for the pointless exercise ever devised by the government? So the long term unemployed are now literally being criminalized by forcing them into community service. How can anyone not see what this is is beyond me. The problem we have is lack of jobs, particularly in the North. Unemployment is horrible, can affect anyone, and is ever prevalent in younger groups, the vast majority of whom I'm sure want to work rather than exist in perpetual penury and boredom. I haven't seen anything about the mentally ill, as far as I've read it's aimed purely at those on JSA. And the point is that they'll be undertaking these activities in return for their dole money, I'd imagine it'll work out at well above minimum wage, we're not talking about them being forced to do full time hours, it'll be ten hours a week max. imo. They haven't announced any details of the policy but I'm a supporter of the majority of it in principle, that's not to say that the implementation of it won't be fucked up. Getting the mentally ill into a ‘mandatory intensive regime’ shows an ignorance of mental illness. Also, 30 hours of community service or 35 hours in the job centre is a joke. As I said above, I supported the idea in principle but was wary of how it would play out in reality and looks like I was right to be. It sounds to me like this is a ham fisted £300m attempt to force those doing the double off benefits and what the Tories view as a kick up the arse for the lazy wastrels happy to sit around claiming the dole.
