Happy Face 29
On the blower to the lone gunman. Trump said she had called him and conceded. ?? She sent Podesta out to do a non-concession 5 minutes before she conceded over the phone. It's traditional for a defeated candidate to concede publicly. Gemmill 44265
Any conspiracy theories as to why Clinton hasn't conceded yet Parky? Disgracefully ungracious behaviour. Is she worried about choking on the words. Half 9 this morning Eastern time she's gonna be speaking.

ewerk 30221
Aye one of the US commentators on the BBC was suggesting that this morning. Can't see a valid argument why it isn't one person one vote anyway like. Seems the fairest way on doing it on a single issue. I've said that prior to this result too. You're not the only one. Happy Face 29
I was wrong about low income people voting against their interests... at least a majority of them.. Broken down by income bracket, 52% of voters earning less than $50,000 a year voted for Clinton, and 41% for Trump. 36% of the electorate earn less than $50k. so 15% of America voted Trump despite incomes under $50k compared to 21% of america voting Clinton despite incomes under $50k. Ben Goldacre reckons the key here is that there was a 16% swing in that group to Trump which was key - not the actual percentage. Anorthernsoul 1221
The Democrats committed suicide by forcing Sanders out. Then Trump just played the perfect game with the yank public after that.
Howay 12496
I also think it's worth not overstating the nature of the "movement" too much. A small shift in the other direction and you have President Romney four years ago, a small shift in the other direction and you have a Remain win, and so on - these things are often fairly finely balanced, and it's not as if the US/UK populations would have had a fundamentally different make-up if those had been the outcomes, you're still talking a broad split down the middle (like a lot of the time in modern-day US anyway). It's just the post-Brexit problem of a narrow victory in a polarised vote being spun into a blanket statement of uniform intent, and obviously any system that's a de facto referendum like a US presidential election is susceptible to negative rather than positive voting. Reading too much into people's thoughts is therefore perhaps to be avoided. But I have no idea really. Really good post Meenzer. I think in things like this it's easy for people to blow it out of hand and say "the whole country is fucking racist" as I've seen on facebook this morning but the majority of people that voted Trump did so because he's Republican and they always vote Republican. They're saying he got more of the Black vote and Latino vote than Romney did 4 years ago, so it's things like that that have contributed to his win. Clinton took things for granted, she ignored Wisconsin since the Primary as it's been a Democrat state for the last few elections, meanwhile Trump kept going there even though his campaign team said it was pointless, he won it. She managed it like a politician and he didn't, he tried to win every little thing and in the end those little things paid off as these things are won by small margins. Anorthernsoul 1221
Interesting to hear what Chompsky said in 2010. "“The United States is extremely lucky that no honest, charismatic figure has arisen. Every charismatic figure is such an obvious crook that he destroys himself, like McCarthy or Nixon or the evangelist preachers. If somebody comes along who is charismatic and honest this country is in real trouble because of the frustration, disillusionment, the justified anger and the absence of any coherent response. What are people supposed to think if someone says ‘I have got an answer, we have an enemy’? There it was the Jews. Here it will be the illegal immigrants and the blacks. We will be told that white males are a persecuted minority. We will be told we have to defend ourselves and the honor of the nation. Military force will be exalted. People will be beaten up. This could become an overwhelming force. And if it happens it will be more dangerous than Germany. The United States is the world power. Germany was powerful but had more powerful antagonists. I don’t think all this is very far away. If the polls are accurate it is not the Republicans but the right-wing Republicans, the crazed Republicans, who will sweep the next election.” Pretty much bang on there. Renton 21231
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2016/apr/15/neoliberalism-ideology-problem-george-monbiot For the third time now. Could you at least read it and tell me why you don't agree Okay, I've read it and understand why you say neoliberal so much. You're right, we have different terminologies, I would have classes neoliberalism as discussed in that article as market capitalism, but my own understood definition is much narrower. Anyway, not much to disagree on but I don't think any of it conflicts with my own views. The problem is, literally every system of political philosophy seems to have ultimately failed over time. I believe the problem of governance in an overpopulated world with limited resources is ultimately impossible.
