US election 2016

The global stock markets are going to take a battering if Trump wins

I maintain that I'd prefer Hillary to be in power generally, but my ideal scenario would be for Trump to win for just that first day alone to see the whole world lose its collective shit, and then for someone to come forward and say that there was a miscount and that actually Hillary won.

I don't think it's going to make much of a difference to us.

The election? I agree tbh.

Although if Trump wins, it might restore the pound a bit.

trump's policies, if enacted, could have a massive influence on the global economy. he could set off the biggest trade war since the great depression, sparking sustained market volatility, which will shaft all of our pension funds even more than they already have been since 2008

and despite the concerns of several people on here about hillary the hawk's foreign policy, who knows wnat the fuck the world would look like with trump at the helm? he's a an egomaniac, who has professed a love for war, thinks nothing of declaring his love of war crimes, like murdering the families of terrorists. we coudl end up with a trigger happy loose cannon leading the free world.

this is quite a big moment.

I see what you're saying, but in a perverse sense, he's actually claiming in the highlighted bit to be the same as people like Clinton, Obama and Bush. They did all those things.

Trump won't be allowed to do anything radical. There'll be a short term dip in the markets if he wins - there's already been a canny sell off in the last week just in case - and then it'll be as you were, with a new neutered fuckwit in the white house.

if he does go ahead with what he's proposing on trade, the market impact will be sustained. whether he is allowed to enact any of it remains to be seen.

i still find the prospect of him in the white house terrifying and as seminal moment for humanity.

I kind of want to see how in hell he'd build that freaking wall, while at the same time getting Mexico to pay for it...

Would it be The Great Wall of America?

Aye, for all his big talk, Trump would find himself as one of the most toothless presidents of recent times.

it's a bit like the brexit situation though. there will have to be a balance struck. some of his outlandish shit might survive or you're in danger of an armed, redneck electorate growing angry with elites making a mockery of the democratic process.

domestically his election will also give more of a voice to the far right in the states, and consequently worldwide. if trump ends up in the white house, having fought a campaign largely driven by hateful, divisive and racist rhetoric, it gives hope to extremists around the world.

Possibly, but his failure to get in might just intensify the extremism. I thought the old adage was that you need to give these things a platform in order for them to look ridiculous, rather than suppress them and force them down. If we give Trump a platform, the right is going to look plenty fucking stupid.

it could be anarchy on the streets in america either way tbh - on the one side you've got trump's hillbilly supporters ready to take down hillary in an act of patriotic protest against a rigged election, on the other hand you've got the same group of nutjobs potentially ready to do the same thing if trump finds himself handcuffed in power.

maybe this is the real reason the us police force have been stockpiling military style weapons recently.

Do you really think it'll come to that? The average US citizen is a bit less mundane than the average UK citizen, but they're a long fucking shout from overthrowing their government. They'd need a figurehead anyway, and if it looked even remotely like Trump was going to be that figurehead, they'd have him shot.

There's that old adage, when America coughs the whole World catches a cold.

Well if that's true should Trump be elected we're getting a boatload of bad aids.

Honestly, what worries me most about this situation is how fucking thick people are. Trump has openly mocked disabled people, shown an unprecedented degree of misogynistic tendencies, shown extreme xenophobia, boasted about evading tax, spun every conspiracy theory going, and is an islamophobe in the true sense of the world. Comparatively, nobody has ever been able to show Clinton of any real wrongdoing. And yet here we are.....

I think people are looking past the candidates to a degree. That's actually a good thing, normally... not so much in this election.

i'm not suggesting they overthrow the government. i imagine there'll be protest, some of which could be violent, if he narrowly loses. trump is actively encouraging it

I don't know, the guy comes across as monstrous to me. Christ, I never thought I'd dislike anyone as much Bush junior. It staggers me how any woman, minority, or decent person could vote for him. I mean, abstain if you must but to positively give him your vote?

i think that's he wont win. he must have offended well over half the elctorate, and unsettled a lot of moderate republicans. even solid republican states like arizona and texas are looking close this time.

He upset most people when he was after the Republican nomination...He was only talking to Republicans at the time. You'll notice he's toned a lot of that down now.

hardly, he can't help himself. he's been using the language of fear regarding immigration before, during and since the primaries. he insulted the parents of a fallen muslim american war hero, and refused to back down. that was a big moment in the campaign. then you've got the icing on the cake - the pussy grab tape. there will no doubt still be some idiotic females out there who agree with trump when he argued that boasts of sexual assault can be dismissed as locker room banter, but i'd be surprised if that washes with the majority of the country's women. i just think he's insulted or offended too many voter groups, and the polls seem to support that.
