Long-serving Jonas Gutierrez, meanwhile, has not been seen on Tyneside since the start of pre-season training.

The Gazette understands that Gutierrez – who spent the second half of last season on loan at Norwich City – has been told to find another club.

The 31-year-old has a year left on his St James’s Park deal.

However, Gutierrez – who has made 195 career appearances for Newcastle – is close to triggering a clause in his contract which would entitle him to a contract extension.

And he has almost certainly kicked his last ball for United, though the club has made no comment on his situation.

Whatever his shortcomings he's one of the hardest working players we've had in recent years and didn't hide. It seems ridiculous that he doesn't sit down with the club and waive this extension trigger so he can concentrate on playing football.

It seems that whatever had to happen which would allow him to sign an extension has happened.Pav sat on his arse for the last 18 months of his contact so he could go on a free.He even came out and said so.Jonas will be on big bucks and he will know he will not get the same money if he signs for another english club.Hardworking, aye,i'll go along with that, but nowt else.

No it hasn't :D

An extension is triggered if Jonas plays 5 more games.

He's not being played because the club are not interested in paying him the wage he's on beyond his current contract ending.

Jonas is not asking his agent to renegotiate the terms of his contract to get him back on the pitch because he doesn't want to accept less money in the short term or the long term.

Stupid clause to provide a player in the first place.

What are you basing this on? The rumour is that the club stop playing him in order to prevent him reaching the number of appearances that would have triggered a contract extension. Without the extension he still has a year to go but has been told to find another club as he wont get a game for us.

It's a shocking way to treat a player.

Its the only way to treat a player who you dont want and who prefers to stay.

You've played hard for the club, 190 odd games, the odd important goal, put the graft in and they then want you to find another contract with a probable pay-cut. Most people wouldnt accept the pay-cut, so the club can only be arseholes to try and get rid of the player.

Not saying any of that is fair or what should happen to Jonas, just thats how the system of fixed-term contracts works in these circumstances.

Nah they don't have to be arseholes, bollocks.
