New Laptop/Chromebook/Macbook

My current laptop is grand and does the job when I'm on the train, but I'm looking for a newer, lighter, smaller device that still has a proper keyboard. I've tried typing on an iPad, but it's not as physically satisfying as tapping out on a responsive keyboard.

I don't want another large laptop like the one I've got now; 17" screen, 9 cell battery, blah blah. I want a wee browser, MS Office capable, media player.

Any of you technophiles have suggestions, recommendations, warnings or advice?

A cheapish i5 'ultrabook' is where I'd be looking. I ordered one for my old man recently, $550 (approx 360GBP). Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E330, i5-3230M, 8GB DDR3, 500 GB HDD and a 6 cell battery. Lenovo still allow you to order it with Win7 as well. I wouldn't get anything with a smaller capacity battery.

Got a £200 Samsung chromebook 3 weeks ago, very happy with it. Perfect for surfing/writing/streaming but it doesn't have much grunt if you're multi tasking. 6 hour battery life.

can it play 720p youtube and the like without stuttering TS?

I love my wee asus netbook, 9hr battery, 6hrs while watching videos or whatever, small and light as well but 720p just grinds it to a halt which is annoying, tbh flash video in general it struggles with could use an upgrade to something similar.

Yes in full screen it's fine at 720. But if you're watching something in one window and working in another it can get a bit chewy - like I said it's not great for multitasking.

Don't go down the Mac route if you want value for money.

I spent £800 on this macbook in 2007. 6 years and 5 months later, with no memory upgrades, it still purrs along nicely. Battery needs replacing but thats to be expected.

My brother said the same thing to me about price but he's on his 3rd laptop in the same period.

How much stress have you been putting it under over those 6yrs? You travel with work, don't you? Is this your work laptop, or more for personal use?

I am tempted by a macbook air, mostly because it's just a sexy piece of equipment and I'm a child though

Thanks for the input lads, it's appreciated. This Lenovo meets the specs I'm after and is a very reasonable price (especially with £100 off), but the keypad and case look like they've been made cheaply. I'd worry about durability.

Anybody heard bad reviews of it?

  • 1 year later...

What did you get in the end @@The Fish?.....looking at doing similar to you soon and fancy an ultrabook myself but the lack of a cd/dvd drive on the latest ones is putting me off...I've seldom bought music through iTunes or Google play, I tend to buy CDs and upload them...an external drive is possible but it's a bit of a faff...any other recommendations greatly appreciated :good:
