Thatcher Dead

I hope they do. Could do with a reminder to he media that most don't want a reverential remembrance of her.

It would more likely remind the media at just how disrespectful football fans can be at times. They'd lap it up. Although it appears there won't be any silences anyway (and I've never seen the point of holding them for anyone not directly connected to the club or the game, the current trend for a minutes silence for any old tragedy seems all too Victimpool for me).

The implicatino being I missed the point? How so? Do you know much about the political history of the railways Mr Meenzer?

The point of the post was highlighting Thatcher's rhetoric rather than a comparison to the situation with the railways in the UK under Thatcher's rule. That's what you've been wooshed on...

Thatcher came to power in 1979, what lines needed to be shut on economic grounds had already been long before her era. The only major closures in the 1980s were single-track freight branches, which tend not to go anywhere near slums, and tend not to make any money once the subsidised industries they served have gone, no matter how long you wait. It is now 2013, and only now are we seeing a tiny tiny tiny fraction of the lines that Beeching shut all the way back in 1962 being considered for re-opening based on changes in their likely viability. For that reason, plus the other more glaringly obvious differences between the social policies, infrastructure and ecomonies of the two countries, your comparison is laughable. If you want to know who lacked real foresight regarding the railways in the recent era, you only need to look at the chronic underinvestment in Network Rail during the 'boom years' of Blair/Brown. Not many votes in that apparently, not compared to what you get from building schools and giving nurses more pay.

Govt. have been too busy making money from cars.

Do you count yourself among the number of football fans btw or did you just sign up for this debate?

If Thatcher is in 'hell', then she's undoubtedly already kicked Satan in the nuts and is now just sitting back laughing at all the haters. What have they got after all? 1 day of 'celebrating' her death, with her having lived to a grand old age of 87. What has she got? The warm fuzzy feeling in her final years (pre-dementia of course) of knowing that she changed Britain permanently and irrevocably (good or bad, doesn't matter, nobody remembers the people who did nothing, like most PMs before and after), and the satisfaction from knowing that the only people who hate her are the people she roundly and soundly defeated. Up the workers. Right up em.

There is no hell mate.

Pol Pot changed his country too.

She didn't "defeat" me but she used the power of the state to destroy the lives of millions. She was a cunt.

"RIH" is not really the first reaction of someone who wasn't defeated.

And talking about Pol Pot only makes me wonder how many of the current generation of comprehensively educated kids would even know who he was.

I am a Toon fan yes, hence why I chose this forum to dive into today to join in the festivities. But I wouldn't like to be associated with anyone who thought it was a good thing to boo a minute's silence.

"She specifically did not want a state funeral and nor did her family"

"Costs are to be borne by the government and Lady Thatcher's estate"

"a ceremonial funeral requires the consent of the Queen, which has been given"

"There will be no public lying-in-state, at Thatcher's own request"

"Plans reportedly mooted in 2008, under Gordon Brown's premiership, for a state funeral"

"She particularly did not wish to lie in state as she thought that was not appropriate. And she didn't want a fly-past as she thought that was a waste of money"

What a fucking bitch eh.

She was a bitch for how many lives she ruined, not because of her funeral. The state funeral would have been from the Tories.

But thanks for allaying my concerns, now I can return to my indifference to her death, and constant revulsion at her regime.

Can't say I feel any real emotion at the news. I'm surprised because I thought I'd be elated but i'm not - perhaps it's because she's been cuckoo for a while and I feel somewhat cheated - she effectively died about 8 years ago.

No surprise that she's getting a military honours funeral - all PMs who lead us into war do and Blair will get the same.

Changed the direction of this country significantly and that cannot be denied whether you agreed with her or not. I certainly didn't but you have to accept that as time goes on she'll be considered as somewhat of a visionary.

THAT to me is what will stick in my throat but no doubt there has been previous eras that are historically reported different to actually how it was interpreted by those who live through them.

Not her fault but costs borne by the government means the tax payer is paying. Not a great idea for such divisive politician, indeed one who is almost universally reviled in large areas of the country.

Typical Thatcherite - doesnt comprehend empathy for family, friends, community, society.

Me, Myself, Now - that should be one of her epithets.

Don't say that man. That'll just be a massive downer for all the people jizzing in their pants at the thought of Maggie burning in hell. The crushing reality for them if there is no hell, is that then things are as I described - she died presumably happy in the knowledge that most of the changes she brought to Britain live on today, untouched by any (electable) politician. Her only detractors are the haters on display here, and the pathetic figures like Dennis Skinner and George Galloway and Ken Livinstone and all the other crusty irrelevant wanks who get far more airtime than their contributions to the wider political discourse of today really deserve. When a 'socialist' like Obama is praising her as a defender of freedom etc, then you know you're on the wrong side of history, you're one of the defeated. Suck it up, losers!

Obama is as much an enemy of freedom as she was.

And you're kidding yourself if you think hatred is minimal.

Thatcher married a multi-millionaire before she was an MP (who had gold and diamond investments in South Africa). She was given a safe tory seat to fight (no heroics there). She did the bidding of the CFR and the emerging atlantic consensus (money markets, think tanks, ngo's and so on...) She had the backing of the right wing media (News international and so on..)She was a puppet for the ruling elite that wanted to de-industrialise the west and thus remove wage bargaining, workers rights and their political dienfranchisement. She was only removed when she forgot the script regarding europe...One thing she was absolutely right about.

One day when she will be remembered as what she was - a traitor to her country in favour of the international elite.

You do realise "large areas of the country" voted for her 3 general elections in a row?

Just been listening to a few discussing her on the tv, one was Will Hutton the economist, and their view was basically she was all about the individual and hated "the corporate entity" be that unions or the cbi.

Thatcher was all about friends and family, it's pretty ignorant of anyone to claim otherwise really. And contrary to popular opinion, she didn't say there was no society, she simply pointed out that society is made up of us - our friends and family, and that the people who treated them as two distinct things were deluding themselves. Pretty obvious stuff, that was unsurprisingly beyond the comprehension of the people who, through their socialist upbringing or whatever, were unable to empathise with the effect their thoughts and feelings about society had on the friends and families of others (ie, the bits of society that they presumably didn't either personally know, or feel affinity with due to a shared class or whatever). As for "Me, Myself, Now" - well, that could basically be the motto of the current benefits culture of this country, something that even Thatcher couldn't reform properly.
