Would like to think the likes of Dummett and Good will prove their worth somewhat in the first team this coming season. Maybe Mbabu too.

We thought the same with Ferguson/Tavernier/Bigi last season. One of them playing at a time might be able to hold his own, but if we get a a few players injured together and have to chuck in 2 or 3 of the young lads together at once we'll struggle just as same last season.

Well I think we were extraordinarily unlucky with injuries last season, which didn't help. But I agree. The thing about a lot of these young players is that a lot of them have at least got some first team (loan) experience. And by all accounts they've all done well. So basically most of that group are going to be significantly more reliable and ready than they were 12 months ago.

We should, of course, have strengthened then and sent them out on loan at the start of last season. Not half way through it when we finally bought some players.

Please be your usual Sky sources nonsense...

http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11678/8843561/transfer-news-three-chasing-snubbed-sunderland-full-back-phil-bardsley

Sunderland full-back Phil Bardsley is a target for Fulham, Newcastle and Blackburn, according to Sky sources.

The Scotland international angered manager Paolo Di Canio towards the end of last season when he was pictured in a casino.

Di Canio left Bardsley out of his squad for the pre-season Asia Trophy in Hong Kong, and the 28-year-old has been back on Wearside training with the reserves.

Bardsley admitted earlier this month his time at Sunderland is up, and Sky sources understand his preference is for a move to London.

Bellamy was like 21 when he joined us and was playing for Coventry, Gomis is about to turn 28 and has been playing week in week out for one of the strongest teams in france, it's like playing for psv and ajax every week and still scoring less than someone who plays for Den Hagg.

He's an ok striker who does ok in a poor league, he's not a 60k a week £10m transfer fee player imo.

choice of him or kalou for half of that money i'd prefer the lower, especially when he'd be a better partner for cisse imo, we need a pacey run at/run off type striker, kind of like Vela/Bojan/Hernandez etc

Aubameyang would've been perfect, but a big target man like Gomis? i don't see how it'll work out well myself.

Should be ideal for that floated free kick routine then.

I agree with Ant though, considering we'll be paying 7-8M for someone of his age and past record, surely there are other options out there. Its gotten to that point now though that it'll be a relief to have anyone is, at least he cant be worse than Shola.

Who else do you want?

Someone pacey, who can run the channels, a bit younger too preferably.

The longer this goes on of course the more clubs will try to hold us to ransom. Why dont we ever learn ffs.

I don't know much about Gomis but from I can gather he is a big lad. As Pardew is meant to be pushing 2 up front more this season (rather than Cisse on his own) I think it's as much about him being a foil and working with Cisse as his own goal contribution. Maybe.

Could be said of most squads though.

We were massively unlucky with injuries last season but I think the squad is pretty strong in comparison to most.

At full back we have Santon, Haidara and Debuchy. Then Dummett, Tavernier and even Anita or MYM can fill in if desperate.

Centre backs we have Colo, Taylor, MYM and Williamson can even do a job for a few games (can't be relied on to play as many as he has been though!), then the youngsters.

If we play a midfield 3 we have Cabaye, Sissoko, Marveaux, Jonas, Tiote, Bigiramana (who I have absolutely no concerns about chucking in) then Inman, Newton, Vuckic etc..

It is attacking positions we lack in. Cisse, Gouffran and HBA are great, if we sign Remy and Gomis we will be pretty much complete.

Not a bad squad at all if we get those 2, would love a winger and another centre back mind but I don't think we desperately need those.

Okay, problem there's a lot of youngsters we're relying on there. Based on last season's evidence it just doesnt fill me up with confidence. Least we need to do is get a Perch type versatile player who can play in 2-3 positions.

It is only relying on a lot of youngsters if we have massive injury problems.

If we sign these two then we could have two different outfield teams like -

Remy Cisse Ben Arfa

Marveaux

Bigi Tiote

Haidara MYM Williamson Debuchy

or

Gouffran Gomis

Sissoko

Jonas Cabaye Anita

Dummett Colo Taylor Santon

To me that isn't bad at all, especially as I personally believe Bigiramana and Haidara are ready for regular first team football already and will only get better with games.

Compare that to others outside the top 6 and I doubt many Newcastle fans would swap. The versatility of a few of our players also helps, we would be desperately unlucky not to be able to cover most positions with a quality player imo.
