Aye £80m is fuck all, even though it's roughly what the world record transfer fee is. The utter fucking shite some people talk in defence of the manager is staggering

80 million is fuck all when we have spent fuck all for 10 odd years. You need to spend 40 a year just to stand still man

Nah, I'm not having that like. I appreciate the club has allowed the squad to decline prior to last summer but it's still loads of money over the last two windows. We spent more than the entire Bundesliga in January.

Not sure how Bundesliga spending is relevant. We didn't even spend that much more than Stoke

January window we only spent a couple of million more than Norwich as well.

It's not really about what we've spent these 2 windows it's about what we haven't spent in previous windows.

It's both. You could argue we had a poor squad before those two windows but I think you could equally argue we didn't have one of the worst 3 squads in the league. Then in those two windows we've spent more than our genuine rivals but we're 3rd bottom. Some of that has to be on the manager

I think it's as much to do with the head coach as it is the guy who signs off on the transfers.

When we needed a left winger and a centre half for the first team and depth to really kick on, we signed Vurnon Anita.

It's been said before but the man holding the purse strings loosens them only for a good deal, regardless of what's needed on the pitch.

I think panic set in, in January. Panic and the growing influence of McClaren/Carr.

The £12m we wasted on Thauvin could have gone on a centreback and a left back, both of genuine quality. But it was a "good deal". He's a player with potential who's value has dropped who plays in a position that traditionally commands a higher fee.

That's the crux of the problem. For too long we've had this misguided policy of buying players based on their sell on value instead of the ones the squad needed.

We're still doing it now, despite all the money we've spent recently. How the fuck we didn't spend any money in January on defenders or a proper striker is beyond me.

I think if you do it right, i.e. with the aim of improving the squad over the long term then it isn't a flawed policy as such. Look at Spurs for a great example of that. If you're doing it to make money / just keep the club ticking over then it's problematic. Adds to the general malaise borne out of total lack of ambition as well as being unsustainable in terms of maintain the quality of the squad. I'm under no illusions as to the core problem but it doesn't exonerate the under-performing manager

McClaren gets a lot of plaudits for his coaching ability from ex-pros, is it a lack of impressive leadership? He doesn't strike me as much of a motivator. I'm sure he can swing an arm around a lad with a fragile ego and give him avuncular words of comfort, but I don't really see him inspiring a team into a stoic performance against the odds.

SBR had a soft old Grandpa reputation, but I'm sure I've read accounts of him hauling players (and staff) over the coals when they fell below his standards.

80 million is a massive amount for the position we were in at the end of last season and in comparison to what the teams around us spent. No team around us spent that amount and we're lagging behind those teams which shouldn't be the case. Look at West Ham, they spent a canny bit and got a new manager in and they've flew up the league, we haven't and it's mostly due to the manager imo.

The rest of the league has moved ahead of us because they have spent consistently whereas we made a profit for years (off the top of my head) and did nowt with it, just to spunk it all in one go.

By spending consistently you have a chance to bed players in for a year then improve again the next year, we buy 6/7 players in one year and wonder why we are still shit.
