How do Ashley's other business deals affect us?

About time he got some credit for transforming this club from the shambles it was into what it is today.

He personally can only put the framework in place. It's up to others to deliver the rest.

No surprise you are taken in by the bloke and his crony to be honest.

The accounts published don't cover this year since the stadium was renamed, we will need to wait for this years to be published next year (accounts given in 2012/2013 are for the 2011/2012 financial year, unless im mistaken)

How much of a shambles was it in 2009 when he was in charge of a relegation season in which he appointed 4 managers?

You're not clever enough to re write history CT

I could personally (if I had the money) give every Irish schoolboy a Stoke/Sunderland/whoever club shirt/schoolbag and lets see how many would still be supporting those clubs in a days time never mind 30 years?

Nothing at all to do with always challenging for trophies and having 'United' rammed down their throats by Sky etc.

I agree it's a factor but these guys began supporting them in the 80's before they became the dominant force of English football.

I'm not sure where you were at the time but it was widely reported that Sports Direct were not paying for the naming rights, they were simply showcasing it to other companies. There's simply no argument to be had.

Do you not think the club is in a better all round position now than when he took over?

There's a big picture here CT, yes, we know what Freddie and Douggie left behind but that does not excuse any of Ashleys tenure, things that affect fans like away ticketing, membership only etc never get mentioned by his supporters probably as most of those blowing his trumpet aren't affected and don't give a fuck.

Ewerk, Man U were near the top of the league many times during the eighties, always had a huge profile and won cups got through to finals. If they claim they supported them through 'the hard times' I would actually laugh in their faces. Just because they failed to buy the title for 26 years doesn't mean they were generally shit. They weren't.

Manu have been the best supported club ever since Munich though. Liverpool wiped the floor with them trophy wise in the 70s and 80s but couldn't get within 10k of their crowds.

Question: Sort of related to the Ashley money grab I guess.

Can NUFC support a 75-85k seat stadium? As a Canadian fan I would think definitely yes easily. But I don't really know the demographics of the area so I would like to know.

It's sort of like my favorite college team - Syracuse University. They can pack 30 - 35k for a damn BASKETBALL game and currently have a 50k seat on-campus dome stadium for both basketball and football. They have a wide North American fan base, but I don't think the Syracuse area would be able to fill an 80k seat stadium. You guys get what I'm saying? So, could Newcastle upon Tyne support a significant expansion to St. James` Park?

we could fill a 60k stadium if we had a successful team. we were getting big crowds of 40 odd thousand when the likes of doncaster rovers were coming to town in the recent championship season. the stadium is unlikely to grow much bigger than that. the east stand has listed buildings behind it so the only way to increase capacity would be to raise the gallowgate end and corner to level 7, which i don't think would increase capacity by more than 10k or so.

the main reason the stadium won't grow any more is the cost involved. it would take a long time to pay for itself.

right, that makes more sense. i just remember chez defending ashley a fair bit on here so possibly took it the wrong way.

Never 'defended' any person at all, i've seen sense in the strategy the club followed, had faith in the Ben Arfa, Cabaye signings before everyone else did (was laughed at when i said Tiote and Cabaye could be the best central midfield pair in the league - before anyone on here had seen Cabaye play). I saw the possibilities of having a policy that did not reward previous service (Nolan) and capitalised on transfer offers (Carroll). I've seen why the club's management would want to do things the way they said they wanted to. The main difference was trust, since most people didnt trust that i) they were telling the truth and ii) if they were, they were capable of doing it. My position since they held the salary level at 50m during the relegation season is that they were following what was the most logical way forward. The only time anyone on here has been able to poke holes in that position was for 8 weeks at the end of last year. I consider my analysis as still holding and support the direction we are taking, the difference now, especially since January, is that doubts lingering under ii) above should be a lot less. I've never 'defended Ashley' though, not to my mind anyway. It might come over like that but its always meant to be a general and realistic point of view of our options.

It gets more TV money but that's not Ashley's doing.

The wage bill is about the same.

Turnover about the same

Commercial income is down.

Answer the question! You're a fan not an accountant. Is the club in an all round better state than 2007

are we a more attractive proposition to any prospective sheik takeover? Could Ashley make more money selling the club now compared to 2007?

It's very simple.

Do we feel better about the players, the recruitment policy, the fact we have a plan, the long contracts, the feel around the club, etc.
