Aubameyang, who has been dubbed ‘the African Neymar’, is rated as a huge star in France and has backed that up with 16 goals this season – including one in front of Grimandi as Saint Etienne drew 2-2 with Rennes. Arsene Wenger had his chief talent spotter in France watch Aubameyang specifically, while Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham were also in attendance to monitor the Gabon hitman. It is thought Grimandi gave a glowing report on Aubameyang and his progress this term, and Wenger is now set to send chief scout Steve Rowley in the coming weeks to beef up their knowledge on the player. Newcastle already know all about the 23-year-old having bid for him in January, only for Saint Etienne to reject the offer as they hope to hold out until the summer for a bigger fee. The Ligue 1 side are believed to want up to £15million, but with Aubameyang pushing for a move to England and refusing to sign a new contract, the sale price could be closer to £10million. French media sources spotted Ashley and chief scout Graham Carr in St Etienne at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard as he starred in the huge Ligue 1 clash against David Beckham’s Paris Saint-Germain. PSG went 2-0 up but the home side rallied to earn a 2-2 draw, Emerick- Aubameyang not among the scorers. The Gabon striker was scouted by United in the build- up to the January transfer window but indicated he wanted to stay in France. However, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool interested in his services too, he could be playing in the Premier League next term. Ashley’s visit suggests that the Tynesiders are also serious contenders to prise the 16-goal striker to St James’ Park, a venue he as already played at in the 2012 Olympics. The £10m-rated striker is thought to be interested in a move to Newcastle. But he won’t make a decision on his future until the end of the season. However, the Chronicle understands that the player was impressed by the attendance of Ashley in France, with sources close to his agent revealing his admiration for the move. The Magpies will be in the market for a striker again this summer but must also move fast in the centre-back department, with Fabricio Coloccini seeming likely to quit the club at the end of the season. Much rather want Bony. This guy is a bit like Cisse, every goal depends on either flawless service or situations where he can beat the defender with pace. I think the fact that some of the biggest clubs in the world are looking at this lad says it all really. Not complete? So he has bags of pace, scores with both feet, oh good in the air, scores headers too. Up there in the Ligue 1 goalscorers. He's nothing like Cisse, he can play wide for a start. He would by my striking choice for the summer due to his versatility and his pace which would give us something different.
