PaddockLad 17698
Am being tempted by a Windows 8 pro surface tablet, which runs full windows 8 instead of the one available in this country at the moment which runs the rather more limited Windows RT. Theyre being released in the US on Feb 9th, but no news on any other countries at the moment. Sister in law is a yank so its not a problem getting one shipped across, only trouble is will it work properly in this country?...
PaddockLad 17698
DHL packages are checked by customs?.... Does that mean there aren't any real techy drawbacks then?
ewerk 31224
Will a tablet be powerful enough to run the full Windows 8?
NJS 4411
Expect to be charged 20% VAT - the sender has to put a value on which commercial senders I'm guessing would be correct. Also if they use any form of the US post office it will come via Parcel Force who will charge you a tenner "admin charge" (Fine for daring to buy from abroad). Been reading up on it this week....its a bit of a minefield. Am not the most IT savvy character, but Mrs PL wants a purple Surface "cos they look cute in the advert" this was quite illuminating... http://www.brianmadden.com/blogs/brianmadden/archive/2013/01/24/can-intel-based-windows-8-pro-tablets-ever-come-close-to-the-low-power-and-long-batteries-of-arm-based-devices.aspx
ewerk 31224
The battery life must be next to nothing though?

Hmm....think I may get someone going on holiday to get one for me. those full windows 8 ones have core I5's and such in them with 4 gbs of ram, they'll have the power of an average desktop machine processor wise think it'd be a close run choice between it and the 13" macbook air for me tbh if i was going spend that kinda money with the macbook winning for personal pref/looks. This is what am thinking.......the surface pro does seem a good bit of kit which wont need up grading (for my uses anyway) for a good while. Phil 6
Losing the warrantee for the sake of a months wait is a bit silly? Personally I'd stay away from them until we know how robust the hardware is. Remember the 3 red rings on the xbox, this was a heating/cooling issue MS overlooked/ignored in testing. There are plenty of other models. I like the HP Envy x2 and their business class version (forget the name).
PaddockLad 17698
I thought there wasn't a release date for the surface pro in this country? They're only just releasing the RT version in most of Europe next month...good point on the warranty though. The Hp envy is mentioned in the comments on the blog about battery life I linked...hmmm....
Phil 6
There's quite a few to choose from. The Surface is just hardware, something Microsoft have a bad rep for. other convertibles cnet summary is worth a read
Renton 22008
I had a go on windows 8 on a laptop yesterday. It was horrible, couldn't even work out (without googling) how to turn the fucker off. Edited January 27, 2013 by Renton

Plus Royal Mail handling fee (£15 iirc) and last stuff we had shipped from the US (a present from family) they charged the VAT on the value of the items including the shipping charge. Bastards!! They check everything now, used to be hit or miss. Only way to do it really is to bring it back with you "used" if you are ever there.
CleeToonFan 1
I was going to buy a US MacBook and get it shipped over to the UK last year (just ended up getting a cheap laptop from currys ). There's a website where you pay them a wee bit of money and they sort it all out for you. I think it works for pretty much anything from America but I can't remember the name of it for the life of me
PaddockLad 17698
Had another think about it, spoke to some lads at work and may be going down this road now....no need for buying from the US, get a 32gig ipad2 and use a keyboard with it... http://store.apple.com/uk/product/HA500B/A/logitech-ultrathin-keyboard-cover-for-ipad?fnode=3e http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Logitech-Ultrathin-Keyboard-Cover-/321050610858?var=#vi-content Anyone use a keyboard with an ipad regularly?....and anyone know whats the best option if I want to get a sim card for 3g with an ipad?....is it best just to hook it up to your phone via wifi and use it's 3g/data plan? or should I just get an ultrabook/mac air thingy?....
