So how will the new boys affect Alan Pardew’s tactics – and who will make the first XI? Neil Cameron gives his verdict on who the Magpies should field – and where. IF Alan Pardew has said once this season that he hasn’t been able to field his strongest team, he’s said it 23 times. That’s how many matches we are into this Premier League season, which for Newcastle United has been a disaster for all sorts of reasons. The main one being that Pardew is right with what he’s said regarding team selection. Newcastle are two points and two places above the relegation zone; this time last year the fans were talking about getting into the Champions League. However, five new signings, the fitness of Yohan Cabaye, Hatem Ben Arfa’s imminent return, Sylvain Marveaux’s form and the fact Fabricio Coloccini is staying until the end of this season at least has given Newcastle and their manager some much-needed hope. The first-team squad played a practice match on Friday at the training ground, complete with referee, linesmen and 22-plus players. At last, Pardew has some options. But what is his strongest team? While it is impossible to say how the new players will fare, Newcastle need them to start well. If they can do this, it will allow Pardew to drop some players who need a rest, for example Davide Santon, and others who have not reached their best form all season, such as Jonas Gutierrez. The goalkeeper is an easy call. Tim Krul has let in more goals than he would have liked, but the Dutchman is still reliable and solid as a rock. Mathieu Debuchy must start at right-back, although he needs to express himself more than he has in the last two games. On the other flank, it must be hoped Massadio Haidara hits the ground running, because too many goals have come down the left-back position. And in the middle, Coloccini and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa have the potential to be a no-one-passes central defensive unit. If Moussa Sissoko lives up to his billing then Newcastle have landed a star. He could be excellent alongside Cheick Tiote, who is a much better player when he has a partner in crime. But where Newcastle have really struggled is in the attacking positions. Ben Arfa should be back next month – and not a moment too soon – and he was in excellent form before his hamstring went. Put him on the right, where he can run at defenders, although this guy can play anywhere. Cabaye is Newcastle’s best player. He is much better suited being in the middle of an attacking three, so he can play his passes in and around the opposition box. And Marveaux has been really good lately. He deserves a run in the team and it would be nice to see a naturally left-footed player playing on the left. And then there is Papiss Cisse, a man who a year ago scored when he wanted. He does need help, and Pardew will hope the new signings, plus Cabaye and Ben Arfa will do that, but he also needs to give himself a shake. Cisse isn’t born to play as a lone frontman and needs to score or he will lose his shirt. There isn’t one Englishman in the team, which is a crying shame. However, if Pardew can get these players on the pitch and playing to somewhere near their full potential, a top-10 finish is not out of the question. Everyone and their grandma seems to be dropping Marveaux for Gouffron lately however Marveaux has been the form player of late and doesnt deserve to lose his place. He has orchestrated the creativity from the middle and there is no reason why he cant continue that form on the left. Him cutting in on one side, Ben Arfa on the other and Cabaye taking over in the middle. Yes Please. A capable creative footballer like Marveaux on the left should also lesson the need for the left back to be a marauding, which in turn will hopefully shore up the left back spot. Most people with common sense can see that Santon could possibly do with a rest. Of course its all dream works stuff any way as the chance of field a full strength squad is rare, but if we can then Im happy to go with the above. Clubs had to provide a squad list containing no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the Home Grown Player (HGP) criteria. The remainder of the squad - up to a total of 25 players - must be Home Grown. A Home Grown Player means a player who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21). The Magpies have ten Home Grown Players - Shola Ameobi, Rob Elliot, Dan Gosling, Steve Harper, Tim Krul, James Perch, Danny Simpson, Ryan Taylor, Steven Taylor and Mike Williamson. Changes to the maximum squad list of 25 may be made during the period of a transfer window. Players born on or after January 1st 1991 - like Davide Santon, Massadio Haïdara, Gael Bigirimana and Sammy Ameobi - are classed as under 21 players and are therefore eligible to feature throughout the season, despite not being named in the official 24-man squad.
