ewerk 30616
I'm not sure that the EU would grant an extension in order to mitigate the chaos of no deal. It wouldn't be in their interest to do so.
Dr Gloom 21924
i know they've hinted they would only extend in the event of PV or GE, but couldn't they be bluffing? no deal means a hard irish border, surely something the EU wants to avoid? The UK would have to have a plan in order to get an extension. I don't think using that time for no deal prep would be a good enough reason for the EU. There will be utter chaos at the borders in the event of no deal, that's the biggest card the EU currently hold.
Christmas Tree 4725
Maybe they should just extend for 2 years, agree the deal, hence no backstop.

Weve agreed everything in the withdrawal agreement except the backstop. Junker and Tusk have both said they are ready to quickly get onto the deal. Makes sense therefore to extend for 2 years, agree the deal, happy days all round. Edited March 6, 2019 by Christmas Tree
ewerk 30616
Well the most obvious point is that a deal will never be agreed that will see the border kept open without the backstop given the UK's red lines. The more pertinent point is that article 50 cannot be used to agree a trade deal. We have to be a third party to even begin trade talks.

The only way to avoid a hard border in NI is to have the backstop or go for a Norway plus type deal. Or make NI a special zone with a hard border down the Irish Sea. Or reunification I guess. Its clear the backstop is essential and will be there for years without the ridiculous option of unilateral cancellation. Still CT, you were told NI was an insoluble problem, weren't you?
