The toilet paper we get in at work proudly boasts that it'a "Made from British Trees" Are there people out there who get patriotic about how they wipe their arse?

Standers. On your feet for the flag.

I should never have doubted your knowledge of parliamentary procedure.

It’s all kicking off now in the commons as MP’s confront the government over their confirmation that the meaningful vote is take it or leave it.

CT, as a leaver can you answer me this on the backstop. At the end of the implementation period it will have been nearly five years since the vote. At that time if there is no agreement on how to keep the Irish border open how is it going to be resolved by a further few months of a backstop? How can such a solution be time limited?

First of all, I think the main thrust of expanding the backstop by a few months is mainly for the scenario where a deal has been agreed but some EU countries may not have ratified it in time.

As for the backstop it seems as though we are heading for UK wide customs union and a NI wide Single Market. The U.K. can then make a sovereign decision to align with SM on goods too which would eradicate virtually all need for new checks anywhere.

Except the Tory party would never go for that.

What the absolute fuck would be the point of that? It would be the same as staying in, but with some illusion of sovereignty thrown in. But we'd pay more and have no say, so have less sovereignty. Cracking. :icon_lol:

Your right in a way though. We can either stay in the single market and have completely frictionless trade. Or we can leave the single market, have to stick with EU regulations in all trade we do with them, and have trade frictions, because goods will have to be checked for compliance at the border. Why? Because we wont be subject to the ECJ so the EU will have to check imports are kosher before entry. Trade frictions means Nissan etc are dead. And staying in the CU means no independent trade deals.

At some point CT, even you must realise what a joke of a position we have put ourselves in, surely?

Every week there’s threats from one side or the other. Her plan is to get them to the vote and present the commons with deal or no deal. The assumption being that when push comes to shove, how many Labour and Tory politicians will really force the country into no deal.

It’s the backstop not the permanent deal ;)

So the government were lying about the meaningful vote?

Yeah, I get that. But two things. First, the draft agreement says "unless and until". Not time limited and EU won't agree to make it so, because then it's not a backstop. Secondly, the backstop isn't going to change the situation. The issue will still be there in 3, 5, 10 years time. Technology can't solve all the legal and security issues.
