Aston Villa vs Newcastle United

Would take a draw here, they are just as desperate as we are.

Chances of getting anything from Chelsea and Spurs are slim so this is immensely important. Lose today coupled with Chelski and Spurs then certainly all the morale built up by this window will disappear. Need something today, mind we seem to be saying that every week dont we?

I'm hoping for good performances from the new lads, Cabaye and Cisse. Other than that my hopes and expectations are far lower than yours.

I don't see much to fear tbh. The main problem recently has been confidence. We'd been missing players but most of them were back for the last couple of games. We still all went into the games fearing the worst because there was no confidence and the club as a whole seemed defeated before the games began.

This last week of signings and Colo getting sorted out has raised everyone's hopes right up. Combine that with actually having a team that that you're not looking at massive weakness in personnel and even bigger weakness on the bench and you have to be confident that we have more than enough to beat a team that looks weak on paper, has just been knocked out of both cup competitions by lower league opposition, played as recently as Friday and has generally looked awful for the last two seasons.

Krul

Debuchy

Colo

Mbiwa

Santon

Perch

Sissoko

Cabaye

Marveaux

Cisse

Gouffran

Subs

Taylor

Anita

Jonas

Elliott

Shola

Williamson

Obertan

That looks a squad capable of matching any team in the league on their day and more than capable of beating a team like Villa.

I know with us it doesn't often work out so straightforward but fuck it we need to be positive in our attitude going out their tonight. If we are I'm very confident of a good result :nufc:

Still got an air of caution about this one. Villa fans I follow on twitter are really down about it telling me we'll have no problem tonight and will simply brush them aside. They must really be shit at the moment.

Remember though, we haven't won away from home all season. I'm hoping that the signings give us a kick up the arse and a bit of confidence more than anything. We've still got a core set of players who achieved great things last season which is why we've been so frustrated about our position and results. Bringing the 4 lads in might be a nice shot in the arm for the squad.

Also, you can't help thinking that the business we've done in the past week is the business we should of done in the Summer. Which again, frustrates the fuck out of me.

Could we have done this last weeks business in the summer though? I'm not in anyway defending the lack of investment in the summer but I don't think we could have brought these players in for anything like what we've spent now if we'd went for them then.

You could have easily been talking £10m for Sissoko, £5m for Gouffran, £10+ for Mbwia as well as the £7m or so Lille were after for Debuchy. We could have easily been talking more than £30m for the five players we've spend less than £20m on now. I think a big reason for these deals is that the circumstances with their clubs worked out right all at the same time.

Nah, not for me. Sissoko is the only one who's contract was about to expire and he was coming here in the summer anyway. Why would Mbiwa be worth 3-4 million more 5 months ago?...

By not strengthening in the summer though we've put our self in the position we're in now. We should have been signing players in the summer to build on what we did last year so we could challenge again (plus deal with an extra cup competition). Instead, the mistake leaves us 5th bottom with a mid table finish at best (everything crossed). Sometimes you have to speculate to accumulate.

Totally agree. What I was getting at though, is would we have been able to do these deals in the summer for the same money and the answer is most definitely no. The fact that we could now has arguably set us into action almost as much as the fear of relegation. I believe Ashley works on the basis of doing something if it's a good deal not because it moves us forward as a club. Fear of losing TV money, transfer fees on the assets we already have the bargain deals got all spurred this move for me.

Gouffran's contract was also up so you could so as I say you would have also had to pay a lot more for him. I'm sure I read that the reason we got Mbwia as cheap as we did was because his contract was running out but Montpelier didn't want to let him go last summer so he signed a new contract with them so they wouldn't lose him for nothing next summer but on the basis that they would let him leave for cheap when the time was right. I assume them getting knocked out of the champions league made the time right.

And Sissoko coming here next summer wouldn't have made him any cheaper last summer.

I would doubt that many of these deals were available to be done "in the summer". Sissoko had a £12 Mill bid for him knocked back last January. Debuchy for an extra Million maybe, the rest very doubtfull IMO.
