David Kelly 1260
From what memory I have of Bracewell back in his Everton prime, he certainly looks nothing like the player Hoddle was in the video Stevie posted. Maybe more what he was like by the time he went to Chelsea.
Dr Gloom 22155
Ask any evertonians old enough to remember that team in the 80s. They'll likely disagree. He was a cultured passer of the ball. A million miles from the likes of Didier Deschamp in terms of creativity.
PaddockLad 17660
He should've had 100 caps + but he was totally unappreciated by Bobby Robson and Ron Greenwood too. He was as good as Gazza. I can't think of many British players who had a bigger impact abroad too. John Charles being an exception. Gazza could do more than Hoddle on a football pitch iyam. So could Peter Beardsley because theyd both graft their nuts off as well as the pretty stuff. Hoddle's trouble was he wanted to play in behind 2 strkers and not do any graft. Couldnt be logically accomodated in a 442. 53 caps says he got plenty of chances. Thats what theyd tell you, but loads of skillfull players like Hoddle have been accomodated in teams because of what they can do rather than what they cant. Didnt get a cap after the disater that was Euro 88 when England lost all 3 group games. If he played at SJP more than half a dozen times he'd be lucky...at spurs for 10 years or so 77-87, think we were in the second division for at least half of that time. I can remember him playing for Spurs clearly, but cant picture him in a game at SJP. Edited January 28, 2013 by PaddockLad
PaddockLad 17660
Similar goalscoring records at all parts of their careers. Daftest comparison toontastic has seen people saying Bracewell and Hoddle were "similar". Fuck me, 0.50 into that, I saw that volley v manu on Sportsnight with Harry Carpenter The goal v Watford too, and the volley for England just before that. thinking about it not seen many (any?) players who could volley a ball better than him. Howmanheyman 33849
Budgie Couple of tales I heard about our former keeper who was superb as a character and not a bad keeper either. First one is Ossie's time as our manager. After only a week at the club a shop worker told Burridge anything to do with him had been removed from the club shop on orders of the new manager. Budgie then pulled him and Ossie told him he was going to force him out of United. It seems that the little Argentinean still harboured a grudge from a short spell they had at Southampton as players when Budgie 'cleared him out' in a practice game. Apparently he'd have been bollocked for not doing it as that was what they were taught to do at the time, (the one time he didn't do this to a player was when he went easy on a young, thin, teenage Geordie striker* from the reserves who promptly nearly took Budgie's head off!). Anyway, after the tackle Ossie got up spitting feathers calling him an 'animal' and so on before Budgie retaliated with some Falklands digs and a few years later at St. James' it was pay back time for Ardilles. *Guess who? Vinnie Jones once tried to intimidate some of our players as they came out to warm up at Elland Road in a crunch promotion match in a very hostile atmosphere, (we were also given a joke allocation of tickets, about 800). As they came onto the pitch Jones had some weights placed in the tunnel and was lifting them, contorting his face with his top off and grunting etc. Unfortunately for Jones, John Burridge was our keeper at the time and Budgie was fit as a fiddle, built like a brick shithouse and like most insane people, (Budgie was/is a complete eccentric), unfeasibly strong. As Jones was doing his 'hard man/strong man' routine Budgie walked up, lifted the weights off Jones with one hand and asked him if that was all he could do before lamenting the lack of stamina in young'uns to much laughter from the away team. David Kelly 1260
Aye from memory Burridge was a complete loon (as most best keepers are tbf) and a very useful player. His only problem was his height and the fact he was a fair age when he got here. Looking back, since I've been going to matches we've generally had a good keeper. Caught the arse end of Martin Thomas/Kevin Carr's time and they were pretty decent, then Budgie, Tommy Wright, Pav, Hislop, Given, Harper and now Krul. The only substandard one I can think of in that time is Hooper and possibly Bessant. Ok Hislop wasn't the greatest all the time but I've seen a lot worse at other top league clubs. Howmanheyman 33849
Somebody my dad described to me as the greediest player he's ever seen! Just found this as last nights match put it in my mind.
