I'm hoping they will learn from this season. Not hopeful they will but its not rocket science is it? Invest 20m or so every year, make sure we have decent cover in every position and you can still cash in on a big player every now and again. It stop the revolving door policy and try and keep the majority of the group of players together.

I can't believe that anyone would be negative over this signing. We have been terminally weak at full-back for fucking years. Now we're signing players to cover/provide competition for the two class ones we currently have and that's meant to be a bad thing?

Exactly. An injury to Santon or Debuchy and we'd be back to playing substandard players. Besides that Santon definitely needs some competition as to me it appears he has become complacent with the defending component of his position (which should be the key part).

Santon can't defend, he's massively overrated.

I think Santons way overrated defensively and in his two games so far I cant say Debuchy has shown anything to get excited about.

Im sure Debuchy he has more to show given the way everyone has raved about him pre-signing, but as far as Santons concerned I would much rather he was the back up to someone better.

Might as well write him off then. Winning Ligue 1 with Lille and being one of France's best players as of late means little if he can't integrate into a bottom half Premier League team immediately.

I know you don't watch football outside of NUFC, but surely you at least saw him play against England last June?

Quite possibly true. He was very suspect positionally to begin with, but then seemed to improve. Now it's as though he's a winger getting back to occassionally help up with the defending. As a defender he's excellent at getting forward, but if you wipe off the defending component his end product as a midfielder would be lacking. I think he lacks a bit of agression which is something that helps as a defender, but there's no way I'd write off his ability to become a strong defender at this stage.

How does "Im sure Debuchy has more to show" equate to might as well write him off..... Knackers?

Has to be said that I don't think there's many who rate him particularly high for his defensive ability, so to say he's overrated might not be accurate. He does excel at picking the ball up and bringing it out of defense.

Not in your opinion but in mine and others who post on here he is.

He has cost us a fair few goals of late.

No I'm saying that because everybody has said he's young and has a lot to learn defensively and that will come with experience. He is very gifted technically and good going forward and he just needs to learn his trade.

So nobody is overrating him defensively.

Santon's not overrated defensively at all.

He's class when he wants to be but at times can be a little lacklustre - but that's part and parcel of a full back who's constantly up and down the wing. You can rarely have both but I think Santon will get there.Text off my milanista mate during the reading game "please, please give us Santon". This is a lad who kept C.Ronaldo quiet after all...

It's a joke, it really is.

We strengthen at fullback and now our current left back isn't good enough at all. There are no good days are there?

If he's so fucking good he's not going to be happy spending 38 games a season on the bench is he?

As for Raylor and Simpson not being premier league full backs. They are full backs and they have played in the premier league for years. That makes them premier league fullbacks.

erm... didnt "George Weah's Cousin," get a game for Southampton in the Premier?? Does that make HIM a Premier player??? And if you are pedantic enough to answer yes, would you put him in YOUR team??

What was the point of even posting it though?

Because thats what we are discussing.

A few posts earlier someone describes him as class, another poster calls him overrated, and I agree, simply saying I wish we had someone better at left back and Santon as the back up.

Im sure we would all prefer to have the finished article in each position rather than someone who still has "a lot to learn defensively". Yes?

Maybe only CT suggesting that. I'd say others are happy that some extra competition may improve Santon who has looked lacklustre in carrying out his defensive duties of late.

I was on about your post on Debuchy.

Of course we would but as a club we're not at the level where we could realistically have that in every position. Santon's potential is massive, up until Christmas time he'd probably been our most consistent performer this season. I don't think we need to buy somebody better than him at all. You have to be realistic man.

Things aren't looking good for Shane though. :(
